Leaves turning yellow and stems turning purple.

I've been growing for about a month and a half now, and I just noticed that the lower leaves are turning yellow and the stems attached to them are purple. Whatever is wrong, it looks to be traveling up the plant, as I noticed the stems connecting to the leaves right above it (that are still green), just started turning purple as well. They're also curling under, almost folding in half.

I water them about twice a week, and keep a fan on them to strengthen the stalks. I just started them on a half a tsp. of Epsom Salt (per gallon of water), and a half a tsp. of Miracle Grow All Purpose Plant Food 24-8-16 (per gallon of water). I found that at first they were growing great but now they're almost a a stand-still. Also, I don't know if this makes a difference, but I topped them (pinched) about two-weeks ago. It was a few days after I topped them, that I noticed all of the problems starting. Also, I have several growing right now, and it seems to be affecting a select few of the them, which all happen to be right next to each other.

Again, I'm growing indoor, and I still have them on twenty-four hour light.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you guys! (I have included a couple of pictures highlighting the issues.)

thats the overwatering and overfertilizing combo there jen.and you'll help them greatly if you pot up as soon as you can.plants that size can easily becoming rootbound in those pots.also by potting up,the new soil will not be fertilized and they should pick up and turn around in about a week if ya transplant up and just use clear water.enjoy,'Buz

If I'm not mistaken when stems/leaves start turning purple then its a phosphorous deficiency.
And the yellowing of the bottom leaves is Magnesium or Calcium deficiency.

This is assuming that cannabis acts the same as any other plant when nutrient deficiency occurs.

if its a deficiency its because of overfertlization and lockout.I wouldn't ad a thing at this point

Fertilizer/Water

I actually just fertilized today for the first time. I went out and got it because I thought maybe it would help- this started before I even touched the plants with fertilizer. This started days ago, so it can't be over-fertilization. Thanks for your help. Should I be watering less than twice a week?

PRO-MIX

The answer to all your questions sir, lie within this link. My buddy uses this stuff, and he grows the best stuff I've ever smoked.

Thanks guys.

I'm seriously going to consider re-potting. I was wondering though, since I'm a complete newbie- what would I use/need to "test the soil"? To be completely honest, the only thing I have ever tested for chemicals was the water in my fish tank.

First of all, what soil are you using?

You can get soil test kits similar to the ones used to test fish water.

I agree, with the small pots the roots are too confined and can't work properly, bigger shoes will help

The uniformly yellowing lower leaves would indicate N shortage. Purpling stems can indicate P deficiency but in this case I think it may just show they are stressed. Again I agree with thcbuzz, for whatever reason lockout is causing deficiency, potting up is the way to cure this.

Something else worth considering- if the pH of the water you are using is too high or low this might cause certain nutrients to become unavailable to the plants, the symptoms would show like a nutrient deficiency.
Also, if you use tapwater, chlorine in the water can cause issues. This can be avoided by letting the water stand for 24 hrs or so in an open container to let the chlorine evaporate.

Depends how big you want them to grow- 2 or 3 gallon will support a good sized plant.

And stay away from Miracle Gro. Other than constant pH issues, their ferts are often time released. Yuck!

Fox Farm soil and nutrients are very inexpensive, and work great.
