Not to say CFL's aren't the way to go, but you can get small units(100W,150W) with self contained ballasts pretty cheap on e-bay. There will be more heat issues and energy use but nothing major.

I mainly want to keep it simple and learn the basics well before getting into the more complicated methods and techniques of growing.
simple?...y'ud better join me and many others outdoors where mothernature has the upper green hand~

did anyone ask you about your budget?...like i don't mean to pry...but have you got at least 3-5 hundred hundred to spare?..

i really hate your soil recipe...are you sure you don't want to use one of the recipes we have here??...

keep dry soil built up to the lower set of leaves in the meanwhile

I just read a series of posts where you list a bunch of homemade pesticide and fetilizer mix that I'll definately have to try! As far as my budget goes its extremely limited (im in college and have other financial priorities) so thats why I havent looked at any expensive equipment, etc. but what kind or brand of potting soil would you recommend?

I did so because it was my first attempt and I wanted to have 2, just in case the other didnt pop.

I can't figure how you can seperate them. Roots grow so fast and they're so fragile at that stage.

It's definitely a bad move. I guess I should have said that lol. Yeah, by the time they're big enough to transplant, its too late. But they're too fragile to mess with before they tangle. Only solution is to cull the less healthy sprout. Ok, maybe cut the bottle in half or something, idk.

I just helped a friend plant some old seeds, we doubled them because we didn't think most of them would sprout. I wish we hadn't, got lots of doubles. And what Pharm Girl said--from the pics it looks like your soil might be a bit dense. You want a good well-draining soil that can dry up pretty well between waterings. I've used those little reddish-brown lava rocks. Good luck!
