Obama Wiretapping?

It's hardly a new stance for Obama, who has made similar statements in previous campaign speeches, but mention of the issue in a stump speech, alongside more frequently discussed topics like Iraq and education, may give some clue to his priorities.

Let's see how Obama flip-flops just over a year later, when he's in office...

First, they argued, exactly as the Bush Administration did on countless occasions, that the state secrets privilege requires the court to dismiss the issue out of hand. They argue that simply allowing the case to continue "would cause exceptionally grave harm to national security." As in the past, this is a blatant ploy to dismiss the litigation without allowing the courts to consider the evidence.

It's an especially disappointing argument to hear from the Obama Administration. As a candidate, Senator Obama lamented that the Bush Administration "invoked a legal tool known as the 'state secrets' privilege more than any other previous administration to get cases thrown out of civil court." He was right then, and we're dismayed that he and his team seem to have forgotten.

Sad as that is, it's the Department Of Justice's second argument that is the most pernicious. The DOJ claims that the U.S. Government is completely immune from litigation for illegal spying — that the Government can never be sued for surveillance that violates federal privacy statutes.

This isn't change we can believe in. This is change for the worse.

i think this is pretty monumental in that it directly foreshadows how the rest of this idiot's time in office is going to be.

I know you're all just reading this and pissing your pants.

Obama's administration has already proven itself to a large degree in my book...this doesn't please me, but I also didn't expect the DoJ to completely reverse all actions in just under a few months into his presidency.

You sat and watched it while Bush enacted all this for 8 years, suddenly now you're a revolutionary?

The revolutions' coming brothers! Help HFB gain his self-fulfilling prophecy.

Besides, any newshound knows Obama invoked state secrets months ago. All presidents do. Upon reading this site's previous articles, anyone who knows anything about marketing knows this guy's obviously trying to increase his prominent donations button. They talk about RFID's ffs.

LOL... EFF is not one person, it's an organization which has been pwning oppressive American governments by way of lawsuits for years now... They also pwned the RIAA/MPAA into fucking off with all their lawsuits against media pirates.

I'm dumbfounded that America is about to go even further to shit and you guys just sit around, doing nothing. Not caring.

Wtf America?

the downfall of America, apparently, will be its own apathy.

We're at a point now...

...where it's obvious that Obama will flip-flop like any other politician of the Republicrat persuasion. At least with cannabis he remained consistent. We just thought that he might take the issue a bit more seriously after seeing it earn the top-rated spot on his change website. This is why my vote was a protest vote to a third party. But even within my belief system there, I'd be happy to vote for a R or D if the person gets reality and stands by it, as is the case with Ron Paul or Dennis Kucinich. Third party movements come and go like the tide, and we've been at a very low ebb this past decade (the most recent 3rd party fever being 1992 with Perot, and even there a big factor was he was a billionaire). If after 4 years of Obama people truly wake up to the false left-right paradigm and realize both parties are cut from the same cloth, controlled by the same special interests, the mass call for a non D/R might yield someone's rise.

(I'd love to see AJ make the video "The Jesse Ventura Deception..." Won't that be the day! )

Well, I can't speak for HFB or others, but I prefer respectful and intelligent conversation when I post here... but if 'making fun' is all of which you are capable, how can I stop you?

Yes, it frustrates me too. Enough to want to scream sometimes. But I've known since 2002 that D/R are opposite sides of same coin. I succumbed to voting for Kerry in '04 in the name of picking "the lesser of two evils." But I had no excitement for Kerry and was later pissed off at myself for voting for him out of fear, essentially. I knew there was in actuality very little difference in policy plan between him and Bush. I told myself then that in 2008 I would absolutely vote my conscience regardless of popular hype. And I knew with a 99% chance that person would be third party. At least now when the Republicrats piss me off with one of their moves, I feel good about myself for having voted my conscience. It's a very refreshing feeling.

Obama has to continue most of the status quo as to not rock the boat too much too early...Sure he could say 'fuck that I'm doing it this way" but he will loose all support in Washington...Obama is not the second coming nor is he going to solve all our problems, individuals have to work towards the greater good...Apathy is upsetting to watch but American's are stubborn and slow to change anything if it takes any effort or doesn't offer some kind of cash reward...
