Combatting Swine Flu with Cannabis

Combatting Swine Flu with Cannabis?
Tuesday, April 28, 2009

Fascinating

Cannabis Science Inc., an emerging pharmaceutical cannabis company, reported today on the current state of development of its whole-cannabis lozenge in response to Homeland Security Administration Secretary Janet Napolitano's declaration of a public health emergency to deal with the emerging Swine Flu pandemic. The Company's non-toxic lozenge has properties that could alleviate many of the symptoms and harmful effects of the H5N1 bird flu and H1N1 swine flu viruses, and has offered its assistance to HSA today in a letter to Secretary Napolitano. The Company has offered to produce up to 1 million doses of its whole-cannabis lozenge, and provide them to HSA for distribution at cost.

The claims include the fact that marijuana (although specifically not smoked marijuana) can reduce excessive inflammation that can lead to lethal effects of influenza.

So, what are the odds that Secretary Napolitano will accept this generous offer?

Every death has been in Mexico, which doesn't have the greatest living conditions, health care, and overall standard of living. The majority of cases I've read about outside of Mexico (even 3 that are in my area, as they had travelled to Mexico) were all mild and they all continue to improve after being released (with certain guidelines).

I won't say this isn't something that deserves our attention, but I will say that the media outlets which ALL crave ratings are using this scare to the epitome of overkill to get them.

What of foot and mouth disease? What of bird flu?

Bah, bollocks!!

The Business Behind Getting High

36,000 flu deaths a year on average,
they expect a few deaths in the US,
Still means 300,000,000 didn't get it.
More deaths from booze and legal drugs.
Or the chemicals added to cigarettes, not mentioned.
More from Car wrecks and poverty and cages for growing pot that hasn't killed anyone.

Marijuana: A Potential Treatment for “Swine Flu”?

So as the world slowly but surely begins to freak out about the new swine flu going around, I came across an interesting article about Cannabis Science Inc. reporting on a “prospective life saving treatment for H1N1 Swine Flu and H5N1 Bird Flu”.

For those of you not aware, swine flu is highly virulent (meaning there is a reason behind the global interest in finding a way to stop it from spreading).

In walks Cannabis Science Inc. with their “whole-cannabis lozenge”. From the article:

Dr. Robert J. Melamede, Director and Chief Science Officer, stated, “The influenza virus has a unique genetic make up that, in combination with its replicative machinery, has an extraordinary capacity to mutate. As a result, the high lethality of some strains can be attributed to the resulting adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS is caused by an excessive immune inflammatory response driven by Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) that leads to the death of respiratory epithelial cells and resulting organ failure. Endocannabinoids are nature’s way of controlling TNF activity. Existing peer reviewed publications have shown that phytocannabinoids can prevent this cell death by mimicking the endocannabinoids that nature has selected to prevent excessive inflammatory immune responses.”

In other words, the reason swine flu is so dangerous is because it causes your immune system to go into overdrive. Marijuana, however, is a proven immune system suppressant which, in this case, may aid in survival.

So we have a non-toxic, safe, cheap, potential-treatment for a disease that has some people using the word “pandemic”. On top of that, Cannabis Science Inc. has “offered to produce up to 1 million doses” of its lozenge and “provide them to HSA (Homeland Security Administration) for distribution at cost.”

What is there to lose?

I wish one of these global catastrophes, panics, or impending dooms would finally kill us all and be done with it. Next thing, it will be a stress epidemic caused by frightening news stories.

You can't use that black plague as a good guide for this instance the plague was spread by rats and there was no air travel this is human to human infection with air travel on top 10-20 countries or more could be spreading this as we speak, picture if air travel was around back then

o rly? pretty sure I read in the NYTimes this morning that they're unable to say for sure how this flu is even spreading, and apparently pigs may not have even been what transferred the flu to humans.

Be Alert -- i.e. Recognize the Symptoms and Get Help. Swine flu symptoms are similar to regular flu: Fever, body aches, sore throat, cough, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. If you don't feel well, seek medical attention. So far, it's important to note, this swine flu is treatable (and absolutely survivable). It's resistant to two of four antiviral drugs approved for combating the flu: Symmetrel and Flumadine. But two newer antivirals - Tamiflu and Relenza - appear to work.

Personally, I think it's a story concocted to draw our attention away from the economy. "Somewhere between the March-April stock market rally and the containment of the swine flu, I must have missed all this money they printed... So, the Hyundai is $125,000 you say...?"

Seriously, I swear they make this shit up to keep people distracted.

Its sick how much time the media has been spending on this. As if there arn't other important things happening we have to hear the same story over and over for 25 minutes out of an hour broadcast? WTF is happening here...

Apparently 1 reported death in the US now and the WHO has upped this to a level 5 pandemic thing, 6 being full blown pandemic.

If the virus was created in a lab, those who sell tamiflu are the first I would look at.

Oh and the UN (WHO) also happens to think the world has about twice as many people as it needs. I'm not saying conspiracy or anything, but it would be foolish to just deny the possibility of population reduction schemes and making money off other peoples illness all the way to the grave.

that one reported death in the u.s. was an 11 month old toddler.

i think it will become level 6 when a 90 year old dies.

because its sooo out of the ordinary for toddlers and old people to succumb to an influenza virus.

What y'all need to do is make sure your own immune systems are working like they should and by that I mean get friggin' dirty once in awhile, eat some questionable food now and then, skip the shower now and again.

Let it like, practice.

What will eventually kill us all will be the common cold, we will have made sure our bodies defenses have been weakened by years and years of anti bacterial this and anti microbial that, washing everything squeaky clean and some fuck is gonna sneeze...

Dead people everywhere.

Its true what they say, what does not kill us can only serve to make us stronger, I'll be under the car working on savin' some lives.

Ahhhhhahahaha. Conspirocy theorists getting bored maybe?
Viruses transform, so why is it a shock that this one couldnhave? I believe it's dangerous, as all flu can be, but mostly to people pre-dispositioned to getting sick. Not some new crazy black plauge shit. But it's also nothing to ignore. Granted it doesn't need AS much media attention but some is good. I've been in the hospital the past week and they had to go around giving out warnings to all patients to be aware. Funny thing- those masks people are wearing (without the filters, the regular cloth ones) WILL NOT protect you. LOL

Toddler who died of swine flu visited Houston mall

04/30/2009

By CHRISTOPHER SHERMAN / Associated Press

A Mexico City toddler who became the first swine-flu death on U.S. soil spent
a day shopping at a huge indoor mall in Houston one day before he began to
show symptoms.

Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos, who spoke with an aunt of the boy in
Brownsville who made the Houston trip, said they spent three nights in
Houston just before he fell ill and was hospitalized in Brownsville.

The hospital, city and health officials on Wednesday said the 23-month old
boy had traveled from Mexico City to Brownsville, where he became sick.
When the hospital in Brownsville, a city of 140,000, could no longer care for
him, he was medically transported to Texas Children's Hospital. They said he
had had no outside contact in Houston. The family has shown no symptoms.

Frank Michel, a spokesman for Houston Mayor Bill White, said Thursday the
city knew of no earlier visit to Houston before the transport to the hospital.

"We have asked (the epidemiologist studying the case) to go back and
double check," he said.

Calls seeking comment from Texas Children's Hospital were not immediately
returned.

The earlier visit to Houston could be significant because those infected with
the virus can be contagious one day before they show symptoms, according
to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. While the child may have had limited
close contact with people outside his immediate family at The Galleria mall in
Houston, the CDC says it is still not known how easiliy the virus spreads
among people.

Cascos' timeline of the boy's visit, assembled after speaking with his aunt
shows the boy was not only in Brownsville before he fell ill. Cascos declined
to identify the family, citing privacy.

"It's important because we don't know where he contracted it," Cascos
said. "It could've been in Houston or somewhere on the way."

The boy's family flew from Mexico City into Matamoros, Mexico across the
border from Brownsville on the evening of April 3. They spent that night and
the night of April 4 at a Brownsville hotel. On Sunday April 5, the boy, three
brothers, his mother and a cousin drove to Houston for a day of previously
scheduled doctor's appointments for the mother and aunt. The boy, who
officials said had several underlying health problems, did not see a doctor,
Cascos said.

The day of doctor's visits on April 6 lasted from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Cascos
was not sure what hospital the family visited that day.

The family spent April 7 shopping at the swanky Galleria mall in Houston.
They spent three nights at another hotel near the mall, Cascos said.

Late April 7 or early April 8, the family began noticing some flu-like symptoms
in the boy. They drove back to Brownsville April 8. By the time they returned,
the boy had a fever and they took him to a family friend who was a doctor,
Cascos said.

Within a day or two, the fever rose and they took him to another friend who
was a doctor, where he was prescribed Tylenol, Cascos said. The fever
continued to rise and April 13 they took him to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville.

By noon on April 14, the hospital said it could not give him the necessary
care and recommended he be transferred. He was sent to Texas Children's
Hospital in Houston. He died there April 27 and the CDC confirmed the boy
had swine flu.
