This is brilliant news! I'm personally convinced that drug-decrim will decrease crime in any society, plus prison systems will be less overwhelmed and people with addiction problems will be able to get assistance from health services.
Bravo Mexico!

so what? we've been decrimmed in MA since december. Mexico was gonna LEGALIZE ALL DRUGS. I think 2 years ago, before America went in and twisted some arms, but the measure passed through the mexican congress and vicente fox was set to sign it.

a) this is federal, and
b) its still a huge step. Mexican violence and corruption may be the last straw that breaks the back of criminalizing drugs, esp marijuana. So any step from down there in the right direction is, imo, a good sign. |

not gonna stop the violence in Sinaloa. Nothing could stop that though. Saw something on Current where they were talking about herb being $300/kilo in Sinaloa though, and that's before it's bricked up.

Yea, I have a selfish perspective on the violence. I think decrim/legalization would help (they need to go further than this), but I think of the violence as a tool for justifying legalization... not in terms of oh fuck violence is bad.

something tells me that even with Obama in charge, the fact that Mexicans are killing each other to export drugs to the USA is gonna do nothing for legalization. I read a defense department thing about how a failed Mexican state is second only to the collapse of Pakistan in terms of potential damage to America.

^ dude i'm from south texas and people around here are very concerned about violence in mexico because it tends to spill across the boarder. something about execution-style killings not usually going down unless drug lords are involved. . . needless to say the trouble in mexico is less than i stone's throw away from your everyday-american's interests.
canuck is right imo. the increased violence in that area is a direct symptom of prohibition, and we've let the infection grow into a festering pus-hole. it'll keep getting worse until we decide to do something about it, and the best route is to take it out at the source: prohibition. kudos to mexico for seeing the light and taking the first step.

This will just make it easier for the drug cartels to carry on with business as usual. No law enforcement in any country would use decriminalization to go after the people on top. That idea is flawed, especially for a corrupt nation like Mexico that has lost half of it's citizens to the US.
US isn't much better in terms of police going after the right people. Either it's legal or it isn't. I equate this news with mmj becoming legal in another state. Big f'n deal. |

^you are dumb.
decriminalization is focused on everyday citizens that use or abuse drugs. - treatment (if needed) instead of incarceration. it is still very illegal to sell and push drugs. i.e., the gov't can and will still go after cartels and organized crime. |

what would legalization in America do to stop the violence? People will still be willing to pay more for herb than it costs to grow in mexico.

would take the profit out of it (marijuanas not real hard to grow(local nurseries)) i envision junkies lining up at state run treatment cenetrs for thier doses*of less useful drugs(&they eventually being privatized)..
worked when alcohol prohibition was repealed ..and in fifty years we'll have to do the same with cigs..they'll be too expensive to purchase OTC

you have missed the point entirely. We still import liquor. We will continue to have foreign marijuana coming into this country even if it's legal, and there's a good chance a majority of that will come from Mexico.
