I thought this video pretty well represents what I try to convey about my opinion on the free market vs socialism. I figured I'd post it for you to check out.

People mainly make their own choice to be poor by being complacent and not grasping opportunities when they come. Henry Ford is a prime example of taking an idea and putting it into action. He was scoffed at. "Get a horse!!"

I was shunned by many people when I stood with the Governor and we did our best to send the message of why relegalization would be so beneficial to so many people. My friends and family shut me out. We were threatened by police and gangs.

The majority of the people refuse to change direction. Therfore, they end up as the have nots. They either have their hand stuck out, or they believe that they will find a windfall and become wealthy.

Just think of where our economy would be if the oil companies didn't have the control they have. When you legislate your competition out of business, then brainwash everyone against it, you name your own price. George W. Bush could not have taken the world's money and given it to the Saudis if hemp was legal. 9/11 probably would not have happened. As long as the stupid lemmings refuse to educate themselves in a proper manner, we will have the world we have. We didn't change direction, so we wound up where we were headed. You don't know how badly that pisses me off directly.

You're pretty much right. The only problem I see with capitalism in America is the amount of power the government has over private business. The capitalism that everyone demonizes is not what we have seen in America recently. The free market may not be perfect, but neither are humans, and it's the closest thing to a perfect system we've seen.

Steering away from capitalism does not by necessity mean adopting russian or chinese communism.

What has transpired between business and government in America was inevitable. It was not the voters who attempted to buy an advantage in the marketplace for businesses, it was the businesses themselves. From Railroad land grants to corporate welfare, it is business dollars that have paid for the lobbying. The problem is not competition, but the person who wishes to use government power to sidestep competition. A free market is no more appealing to the CEO of Exxon Mobil than it is to the average person, if there is an alternative that has a higher chance of getting him what he wants.

The out of control growth of government power was not taken by force, but handed over for security in one's position. Time after time, we will choose the umbrella of authority to protect us, rather than rely on our own abilities and talents. We all still want a free lunch, unfortunately, the free lunch we get is a lunch someone else paid for, but wasn't allowed to eat.

I never said steering away from capitalism would lead to socialism. But now that you mention it, as soon as the free market is compromised socialist politics start to take over. What's the opposite of free market? A regulated market. What's the opposite of competition? Forcing everyone to be financially equal. What's the opposite of self reliance? Government intervention.
I wouldnt ever say that there's not countries that are in between (i.e. America), but I think it's only a matter of time before socialism takes over after capitalism is abandoned.
