The Wing-Nut Code

What Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin Are Really Saying to Their Followers

When Glenn Beck offers an odd-looking icon for his 9-12 Project, or Sarah Palin says something about her native state that sounds a bit to off-kilter to the ears of those in the lower 48, it's tempting to think, well, they're just nuts.

Perhaps they are, but that's beside the point. The point is that when Beck throws up a graphic of a segmented snake as his project's mascot, or Palin speaks of her native land as the "sovereign" state of Alaska, they're blowing a kind of dog-whistle for the armed and paranoid who make up the right-wing, neo-militia "Patriot" movement and the broader "Tea Party" coalition.

The loose affiliation of right-wing groups under the Tea Party umbrella can make it difficult to discern who's truly dangerous, and who's just an angry blowhard.

For instance, in its report about the resurgence of the militia movement, the Southern Poverty Law Center notes that a Minuteman militia in Southern California uses the Tea Party anthem as its call to arms.

Scott Roeder, the militant anti-abortion activist who is charged with the killing of Dr. George Tiller, counts himself among the members of the patriot movement. continued...

Kill the Messenger
My personal belief is that the CIA didn't need to kill Gary; they'd already set his demise in motion by employing "unnamed sources" to discredit him in the nation's major print media. To the very end, Gary complained that no one had ever disproved a single fact in his series. The fact that so many respected newspapers so eagerly took this bait, and that one of our nation's last true investigative reporters had been driven to such desperation, is something I could not reconcile then or now.

GOP Plans: Threaten Obama with Assassination
The right-wing hate speech polluting the debate over health care is generating more and more threats against President Obama, some truly frightening.

SCAPEGOATING - Blaming social problems on a cultural, racial, or behaviorial group. PREJUDICE - Selling the public on the idea that all members of the targeted group are 'bad' people. LIES - 'Facts', which cannot be verified, and pseudo scientific studies are used as propaganda against the targeted group. History is rewritten. NO PUBLIC DEBATE - "These people have no right to have their viewpoiunt aired." and " Anyone who disagrees or questions us must be one of them!" DEHUMANIZATION - Characterizing all members of a targeted group as subhuman and typically capable of monstrous deeds and/or crimes. PROTECT OUR CHILDREN - "They corrupt, seduce and or destroy our children." CIVIL LIBERTIES SACRIFICED - "We must give up some of our freedoms, liberties, and rights in order to combat this menace to society." LEGAL DESCRIMINATION - Laws criminalize members of targeted group and they may be denied jobs, the right to own property and/or be restricted as to where they may live or go. INFORMERS - Citizens are urged to 'turn in' friends, neighbors, co- workers and family members. SECRET POLICE - Non-uniformed police squads set up to wage war on targeted groups utilizing deception, infiltration, espionage and entrapment.
CONFISCATION OF PROPERTY - Property and assets are seized from people who are members of targeted group. Property may be divided between the informer and the state. REMOVAL FROM SOCIETY - Prisons, rehabilitation camps,'hospitals', executions and genocide...

The right wing's love affair with ignorance

What is it with the right wing's love of moron's. First we had Reagan who was a functioning illiterate. Then we had Bush who couldn't put two words together without screwing up. And now we have Sarah "Africa's a country, right?" Palin. Smart countries elected smart leaders. It's a tested formula for success. But the idiots on the right love to worship at the altar of stupidity.

These right wing losers won't accept that Obama was democratically elected by a large majority. And he won fair and square, not like Bush in 2000 and 2004. They show contempt for their own democratic system and the country as a whole by refusing to accept the will of the people. These phoney "Super Patriots" should properly be called "domestic terrorists" and be treated accordingly.

People like jkd and the thousands that support Palin are simply delusional if they think that freak show quitter from Alaska will ever hold high office again. But of course they are delusional. Who else but a bunch of closet racists would believe the drivel about Obama being born in Kenya?

Jkd, because of people like you, Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, etc, the Republican Party is rapidly turning into The Lunatic Fringe Party of America. It has lost all credibility and relevancy. Keep up the good work!

Oh yeah, don't forget to kiss your gun before you go to bed tonight.

Today’s GOP: Rep. Joe Wilson

Representative Joe Wilson from South Carolina showed Americans who the conservative Republicans are. What the GOP stands for these days. Lies and nothing but lies...

Tonight President Obama presented his address on health care reform to Congress and the American people.

During the address he pointed out some of the lies that have been circulating about the reform plan. The first being “death panels” that would decide the fate of seniors.

He then addressed health coverage for illegal aliens. He said “Now, there are also those who claim that our reform efforts would insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false. The reforms — the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.”

Section 246, page 143 of the House Health Care reform bill clearly states that there will not be any coverage provided for illegal aliens.

This didn’t stop Rep. Joe Wilson from yelling out “You Lie” to the President of . continued...

Obama Heckled by Congressman During Speech

After being smacked about by Repub Dem Whip Clyburn (among others), Wilson issued the standard apology.

Oh, the drama they have down there in South Carolina! Is it something in the water??

Clyburn said the episode was as disgraceful -- if not more -- as Gov. Mark Sanford's revelation that he traveled to Argentina to conduct an extramarital affair when state officials believed he was on vacation in the nearby Appalachian Mountains.

"I thought he [the governor] had embarrassed us as much as we could be embarrassed. But to have a congressman use the floor of the House of Representatives in a joint session to insult the president the way Joe Wilson did is as embarrassing as anything anyone could think of," House Majority Whip James E.Clyburn, D-S.C., said. "Our state can do without this."

Well Of Course It's Racism...

After the 60's the "integrity" of the good ole boy Caucasians stopped excluding other caucasians in their racism, creedism and class warfare. Outside of commies. The 70's started including racism equality among all of the races, especially hippies, indians and farm-workers. Blacks and Gangs are still the easiest marks to profile and shovel through the prison industrial market. Corporate slave labor "renting" inmates for a few bucks a day while laying off thousands of workers. Low wage earners bring less income tax than the cost of incarceration. Unk gets refunds on everything it spends. Tax on $12k @ Mickey D or $35k x mandatory minimum.

Its back to the time of classism, the higher priced tickets get an upper deck of the Titanic and first choice of life boats. Those with homes are less likely to get harassed than someone on the streets, subsidized renting or of a color in a neighborhood known for drug activity. The reason for racism is cheap labor, its really not personal on the big buck bigger picture. Racism is taught through ignorance and fear or selfishness. Slavery wasn't a genetic dislike for darker skin, cheap labor. NAFTA GATT does the same without the direct ignorance of the Klan or supremacists. It creates more poor by eliminating more jobs.

Like the Ganjawar, it only pays if it perpetuates, not win or lose. Not legal or zero tolerance, keep it going. Maintain a labor pool large enough to keep notions of living wages or whistle blowers at bay. Pollute all you want cause everyones too job scared to speak up. Homeless deterrents to advocating. Piss tastes and no knock entries, mandatory profits/sentencing. 3 stripes and eliminate the problem while collecting taxes on $35k a year and giving salaries to prison paraphernalia companies + tax.

Police Actions in Afghanistan, Iraq, Colombia and right chere in river city permit profits to go straight to Halliburdon, Dyncorps, Lockheed, Sikorsky, Black Water, Pisstasters, Probies and Private for profit Cages, all while keeping thousands of Hemp and Ganja products prohibited off the market, preventing competition for the thousands of synthetic alternatives presently being used, all with side effects selling even more, Plus tax. Can't profit on WAR. Mission Accomplished.

So it seems the brainwashers "programming" the O'Really's and Limpbogs "shows" to spew hate on certain groups, to divide them and maintain chaos the same as the Romans and Sanhendren have been doing for 2000 years. Tain't nuthin gnew! Tiring though, you would think maybe we could put aside our temporary differences to stop this runaway Wallmart St train and the various police actions that fuel it.

The German people have no idea of the extent to which they have to be gulled in order to be led. Another weapon I discovered early was the power of the printed word to sway souls to me. The newspaper was soon my gun, my flag - a thing with a soul that could mirror my own.""

Slavery: Another Fine Product Still Made in the USA!
12/17/01 excerpted

Which western country never fully abolished slavery?

SLAVERY IS STILL LEGAL in the USA. Contrary to what we may learn in school, the American Civil War did not see the complete abolition of slavery in 1865. The 13th Amendment to their constitution reads "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude except as punishment for a crime..."

Great numbers of newly freed blacks were quickly 'convicted' and forced to work without pay in state prisons. For those unfortunates all that happened was that ownership of slaves transferred from private parties to the state. Today, with the advent of private, profit-making prisons and prison factories slavery still exists and is moving back to the private sector.

UNICOR operates 90 prison factories and is rapidly expanding. San Quentin inmates enter computer data for the Bank of America. Prisoners in New Mexico take hotel reservations by phone. Hawaiian convicts pack golf balls and at Folsom they manufacture stainless steel vats for beer brewers. The list goes on and on.

As soon as you're born they make you feel small. By giving you no time instead of it all. Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all. They hurt you at home and they hit you at school. They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool. Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules. When they've tortured and scared you for twenty hard years. Then they expect you to pick a career. When you can't really function you're so full of fear.

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV. And you think you're so clever and classless and free. But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see. There's room at the top they are telling you still. But first you must learn how to smile as you kill. If you want to be like the folks on the hill. A working class hero is something to be. If you want to be a hero well just follow me.

The 'R-word' is no joke
For the intellectually disabled and their families, it's just as bad as the "N"-word.

By Maria Shriver

August 22, 2008

This has been a year filled with teachable political moments. Racism, sexism, ageism and "change" have been debated at kitchen tables and water coolers across America. But this last week, those gathered around my kitchen table have been consumed with another discussion, one that is not Democratic or Republican -- it's the "R-word" debate.

The "R-word" stands for "retard." For the 6 million to 8 million Americans with intellectual disabilities and their families, this word and its hurtful use is equal to the impact of the "N-word" on an African American.

The reason it's kitchen-table fodder is because of the Dreamworks film "Tropic Thunder," which topped the box-office charts when it opened last weekend and which will attract many more moviegoers this weekend. In the R-rated film, which I've seen, a character named Simple Jack is a caricature of a person with a developmental disability. In one of the scenes, the character played by Robert Downey Jr. chastises Ben Stiller's character for "going full retard," and the "R-word" is repeated many times.

As a journalist, I respect the right to freedom of speech, and my kids will tell you I laugh the loudest when we see a comedy. But as the niece of someone who had a developmental disability, and as a member of the board of directors of Special Olympics International, I know how hurtful the "R-word" is to someone with a disability. I know why "Tropic Thunder's" opening was met by protests on behalf of the intellectually disabled.

Listen to actor Eddie Barbanell, who serves on the Special Olympics board with me, and he will tell you in very emotional terms how the use of that word has made him feel rejected, stupid, demeaned.

Or you can talk to Special Olympics athlete Loretta Claiborne, who speaks on behalf of millions when she describes how the "R-word" has been used to mock and degrade her. She asks all of us to stop using this word without regard to its effect on the hearts and minds of people with disabilities.

There is an old saying: "Sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me." Even when I chanted it as a child, I never believed it. Words do hurt -- they break people's spirits, they break people's dreams, they break people's hearts.

Kids will see "Tropic Thunder," no matter the rating, and when they leave the theater and go out to their schools, their homes and their communities, they'll call each other the "R-word" because they think it's funny. They'll do it without any idea or regard to how it makes a person with a disability feel.

Too many in the intellectually disabled movement cannot speak out for themselves. It is up to their families and those of us who advocate on their behalf to explain that calling someone by the "R-word" is no longer acceptable and is anything but funny.

It's not acceptable in a movie theater; it's not acceptable on a playground. It's not acceptable that college coaches use it to chastise athletes. It's not OK to use it in a classroom or a boardroom.

"Tropic Thunder" is giving Claiborne, Barbanell and many other individuals and organizations that serve those with special needs -- the Special Olympics, the National Down Syndrome Society, the Arc, the American Assn. of People with Disabilities, Parent to Parent-USA -- a teachable moment. They are ready to join with the entertainment industry to change minds. Dreamworks' decision to include a public service announcement with DVDs of "Tropic Thunder" is an important first step, but far more needs to be done.

Just as important, parents must talk to kids at our kitchen tables about how we have felt when someone called us stupid, idiotic or lame. Because once we put ourselves in someone else's shoes, certain names just aren't that funny any more.

I often quote the Hopi prayer that tells us not to look outside ourselves for a leader. It tells us that we are the ones we have been waiting for. We can exchange one "R-word" for another: respect. We can teach our children that name-calling hurts.

Let's makes the "R-word" as unacceptable as the "N-word." Think of all we can accomplish if we work together.

It's one thing in this political season that shouldn't require a water-cooler debate.

Maria Shriver is the first lady of California.

i hate to be hateful but that rtard stuff makes me laugh .

the r word. rofl .

c'mon .

if people arent allowed to vocalize what they think inside at least to a certain extent without always being shouted at that its not pc then we run the risk of turning our country into a totalitarian place.

overprotective people gotta realize that the best defense to this shit is not to sheild everyone from every person on this earth and try to get every single person to accept your level of morality but rather to develop a thick skin early in life.

Yes, some people are hurtful and cruel, but most people that use the R-word are not directing it at a person with an intellectual disability. Our oldest son has mental retardation, and when he gets into fights with his younger sister she will still unfortunately call him a retrasado, which only serves to escalate things. It can be a hurtful word, but it is also a medical diagnosis, and without it, we wouldn't be able to get services for him.

Here's a post I made on another thread a few days back:

I have a 19 year-old stepson who's retarded. Occasionally he comes out with something perceptive that really makes you think. Every so often, so do Beck and Palin, just not as frequently. By and large though, what my stepson has to say makes much more sense than these two clowns. Maybe this is because he is retarded through an accident of birth -- he never stops asking questions even though he's limited in the way be can process information. Palin and Beck however, who were lucky enough to be born with normal levels of intelligence, somewhere along the line made a deliberate choice to uncritically accept a quisi-religous, dogmatic view of the world. Long ago they bought into a club that requires its member to check their brains at the door.

Agreed-it is a medical diagnosis.
I still maintain, as you point out, it is hurtful. Whether or not the person being referred to is intellectually disabled, the point remains that a medical diagnosis-a disability- something that someone cannot help having-is being used as an insult. You mention that your daughter calls your son "retrasado".
What is your response when she does so? If someone is being ignorant or thoughtless, say that. I just think it's wrong to make fun of people who cannot help what they are, and who cannot defend themselves due to intellectual disability, either directly or indirectly. People with MR know they're disabled. If you wouldn't say something to someone's face, don't say it behind their back. For me, it comes down to the Golden Rule.
