9/12 Census Taker Eagle Scout found with "FED" carved in chest & hung in (I) Kentucky

"It's time to do something"

"We all know what must be done"

Eye Opener: Census Worker Found Hanged

Updated 2:19 p.m. ET

A part-time Census Bureau field worker was found hanged in Kentucky Sept.
12 with the word "fed" scrawled across his chest, according to a law
enforcement source. Bill Sparkman, 51, who was white, was found at the
Daniel Boone National Forest in rural southeast Kentucky, the Associated
Press first reported Wednesday night.

Sparkman, an Eagle scout, moved to southeast Kentucky to be a local
director for the Boy Scouts of America, his mother told the AP. He most
recently served as a substitute teacher in Laurel County and earned extra
money as a Census field worker.

Census Worker's Death: The Next Generation of Lynching? - William sparkman - Gawker

We know that the levels of right-wing vitriol have reached psychotic new
heights. But could they really be behind the "apparent homicide" of a
Kentucky census worker, William Sparkman? Should we be calling this, as
some are, a "lynching?"

On September 12, the same day as those wacky protests, Sparkman was
found hanging from a tree with the word "fed" carved into his chest.
The 51-
year old single father and substitute teacher had been canvassing Kentucky's
rural, poor Clay County for the Census Bureau. That sounds like a pretty safe
job, yes, but locals warned Sparkman of hidden dangers lurking in the blue
grass. Recalled former State Trooper Gilbert Acciardo:

I told him on more than one occasion, based on my years in the state
police, 'Mr. Sparkman, when you go into those counties, be careful because
people are going to perceive you different than they do elsewhere.

Even though he was with the Census Bureau, sometimes people can view
someone with any government agency as 'the government.' I just was afraid
that he might meet the wrong character along the way up there.

Turning Sparkman into a symbol will be easy
— he was a single father, an Eagle Scout and completed his teaching degree while fighting cancer

I like the way the television news glosses over "the advise" given to him by a friend.

The friend was a former State Trooper!

When a State Cop tells you to be carefull in a neighborhood
or whole entire counties,
you'd better heed his advice.

Entire Counties!
Holy shit!

not much to discuss as there is, some insane person took the life of another bc s/he's watched too much fox news or listened to too much talk radio. it's just sad. . . i had to do a double take last night when i passed by the tv and saw the headline "census worker hanged." it seemed to surreal. people are really disgusting

the saddest part is this is only the beginning. nothing has really happened in this country yet and the insane base is already in an uproar, and it's only the tip of the iceberg. when shit really starts rolling the true vicious insanity will be exposed. i listen to talk radio for laughs and there are some really fucked in the head people out there. . .

I was watching C-SPAN Washington Journal this morning Sept 24,
and a cop actually confessed his racism on air.

Other callers started calling in disbelief.

If you catch the shows on the weekend,
sometimes people call in drunk from the night before.

But the crazies usually have the best political gossip before anyone else.

thats unsettling, I worked for the census bureau back in the spring time and I had to go out to the boonies and go to peoples houses who are probably as like-minded as the person who did this...i'd say they have a good chance of finding who did it as we had computers that would show which address he visited last

I don't think it has to do with their political views (well, in way it sorta does, but you know what I mean). You can't just blame Fox news for the death of this guy. I'm more partial to Fox than most other stations, but it's very obvious to me that you have to take everything you hear anybody saying about anything political with like a tablespoon of salt because even if it's the truth, it's probably stretched a mile long.

In other words, the local yokels don't like Big Brother very much. I think it was more to keep the government as a whole out of their county, as apposed to trying to keep liberals or conservatives out of their county individually.

I don't know really, nobody really knows, but I think it's a shame that it happened. From what I can tell, he was a very good guy and was just trying to give back to his community and country.

I'm not big into politics, so maybe there's something I'm missing.

how can killing someone, a "fed," and labeling him such on his corpse not be politically motivated?

i'm not directly blaming fox news, but it's an undeniable fact that the vitriol they spew intensifies an air of paranoia that is driving people to unfortunate acts such as this. fox news/"conservative" talk radio foments a great deal of grief, despair, anger, outrage. . . it's no wonder the desperate measures some are taking in response are so drastic.

did you miss this link i posted? Daily Kos: Glenn Beck Fan, Highly Armed, Busted For Casing National Guard Base, Thinking It Was A "FEMA Camp"

this is not just empty conjecture there is a history of crazy people doing crazy things, not at the behest of pundits but in response to what they present. . . which is by their own admission and to anyone with a brain "entertainment" and not news. some entertainment, that

I wonder if this is going to effect the Census Taker part timers.

"I ain't going in there!"

or

"Fuck that, they don't scare me.
Gimme that clipboard, goddamnit."

Americans have nothing to be scared of.

Not even Rural Kentucky.

Could it effect the Count?

Rural Underrepresentation?
(more than usual)

It's been over a month, and this still bugs me.

Why haven't they caught these bastards yet?

Maybe they're too busy busting growers?

Here's more about this good man from Wikipedia:

Sparkman was raised in Mulberry, Florida and was the oldest of three sons of a high school principal and a furniture company executive. Sparkman was an altar boy as a child. In high school he wrote for the local weekly newspaper, The Mulberry Press, and was the football team manager. An Eagle Scout, he worked for the Boy Scouts of America as an adult, overseeing the programs in Polk and Hillsborough counties. This work later took him to Atlanta, Georgia, then London, Kentucky in 1993.

Once in Kentucky he raised his adopted son alone, joined a local Methodist Church, and for nine years worked at an elementary school as a volunteer and instructional assistant. In 2005 Sparkman began part-time work with the United States Census Bureau and studied education with Western Governors University, an online college. In 2007, after medical treatment of an ingrown toe nail, Sparkman's doctor identified a cyst which led to his diagnosis of Stage-3 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He continued teaching while receiving chemotherapy treatments from November 2007 to March 2008, during which time he completed his academic coursework and was invited to speak at the commencement ceremony at Western Governors University in Salt Lake City, Utah. After graduation he pursued a position as a middle school math teacher.
