Israel has never had a religious Prime Minister, Foriegn secretary, Defence Minister or Finance minister. (I may be wrong here, I think we may have one or two slightly religious ones in high places but no more than that.)

The religious role in politics is purely to squeeze money out of the country to fund them to "study Torah" which usually is just an excuse not to work.
Very few of them even serve in the army.

They also use their power to keep Irael "kosher" (ish).
But that's about all.

The violent settlers, our zeaots of today are actually mostly jews that came from Brooklyn and are not a home grown faction. (although their children are)

It's an interesting question. You see we are dealing here with a people dispossessed of their homeland for 2000 years.
In the time of Moses when the bible was written, there were no jews, we were the children of Israel. (Israel being Jacob).
We then became the Israelites in the time of Saul, David and Solomon.
We then got messes up by the Iraqi's
By the time the greek arrived we were the "tribe of Judah"
The west was fighting the Iranians back then too, (this is not a modern struggle)
We then became the hashmonains then the Maccabee's
and then the Jews.

So for around 2000 years of a 3500 year history we have been Jews.

However 60 years ago we got the country back and became Israeli's again. However over half of the world's jews DON'T live in Israel and aren't Israeli's but are still Jewish.

It's more than religion, it's a heritage, it's a history. The Jewish people are more than a religion. we are a tribe that traces it's birth to this stupid piece of land over 3000 years ago.
