What happened to global warming?

BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | What happened to global warming?

This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998.

But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures.

And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise.

So what on Earth is going on?

That's why I prefer the phrase of climate change...the climate is going through a radical shift but it doesn't mean it's just getting warmer. Our ecological destruction has affected more than just CO2, which I do not feel is soley responsible. Having polluted air and water is shitty period, but there's far worse things happening that we're doing that is causing an influence. It's obvious the climate always has and will change...our practices are just making it harder for us to change in harmony with the Earth.

But that's changing...if anything comes out of this global warming 'scare', I hope it's to be the 'clean energy' cities/economies of the future:

the environment fluctuates. it's not a steady downhill/uphill thing, imo. i think a lot of the reports on how terrible things are and how terrible things are going to be are overblown, but also the reports saying nothing is happening and everything is fine is overblown too. there's a balance we need to find, and the good things that has come out of the panic of global warming should be embraced (reduction of carbon emissions in vehicles, stopping our dependence on fossil fuels, renewable and clean/green power, recycling in all it's forms, ect..).

It's not headline news anymore because its and old subject that doesn't have the political impact it once had. Now its the "war on terror", democracy in Iran, illegal aliens, the H1N1 "panic" and selling vaccinations, etc. The political and media scene always focus on whatever gets attention and ratings/support.

Doesn't methane do something to the environment? I've noticed that many people are farting these days. It gets in the air... other people breathe it and then they fart too, compounding the problem. Also, it's a fact that everyone who ever did hard drugs farted first. The government did a "study" and found that rapists fart; pedophiles fart; theives and compulsive gamblers fart. Farting is Satanic! It's The Devil's gas. Farting leads to countless evils. It makes illegal aliens want to have sex with white women! It makes the most pious of men laugh out loud... in public! We must irradicate this scourge! Zero tolerance. If you fart, you will be found and you will go to jail. We'll make room. Oh, but the pharmaceutical industry will save you with Rx AntiFart. Side-effects include headache, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, kidney failure, cancer, death. So ask your doctor today if Antifart is right for you!

The reason we are all talking about "global warming/changes now is because of this man:
Al Gore and his Generation Investment Management LLP. Who would think that men might make serious money off carbon credits? We've been had again.
Creators of carbon credit scheme cashing in on it

^^ this.

And I love you waves, but come on. "Global Warming" was a phrase coined a long time ago to describe an easy-to-understand aspect of climate change for the masses...it is NOT synonymous with climate change which is what IS going on...

well farting actually IS a problem...but only because we've overpopulated the planet causing more farts, combined with mass-producing cattle for our meat obsession who fart a shitton too.

Oddly enough, I see a nice balance to this tho...we overpopulate, and the earth eventually destroys us if we continue to rape and pillage...

Newsflash: global warming doesn't mean that we're going to see a rise in global temperature. it means that the ICECAPS WILL START MELTING AND WE WILL RECIEVE MORE PRECIPITATION.

Pollution is only a problem in impoverished regions, even some parts of the US like New Jersey. Most pollution is created by the poor regions in the world who have no resources/technology to be clean in their activities.

Global warming is a myth of course, despite what Al Gore tells you.

The US may produce the most CO, but if you look at the pollution habits of countries like China, Russia, and some African countries, they are deplorable. They have no regulations and basically dump waste wherever it suits them.

Then fags like Al Gore who are more consumerist than anyone want to make us feel guilty and scared.

try not to let short-term fluctuations in temperature blind you to long-term trends. 1998 was unusually warm in large part because of the el nino weather system. some science organizations, including nasa's goddard institute for space studies say that 2005 was actually hotter by a few hundredths of a degree, if you want to get technical about it. regardless, it is a long-term trend.

also, on a tangent, you can't base your own conclusions and observations about a macro scale system when a day/week/season/some other minimal lenghth of time in your particular geographical area is colder or warmer than usual. i know how people like to do that.

i havent seen one even partly convincing argument put forth by posters here challenging the theory. its all bullshit second hand articles by news organizations, which tells me no one really has a good grasp on the science involved.

whos that dude that works for the gov't? takes hella dope photos and works with weather stuff? he made a thread to clear up misconceptions about climate change and that thread should be stickied.

It is a long term trend, which means neither side has much credibility. Who are the "experts" anyways? People who major in meteorology? Biosciences? Geology? What?

The articles in favor always say the "experts in their findings". And their predictions are always as dismal as it gets. No more crops, less freshwater, total chaos.
