The lure of iReporter fame encourages dangerous tornado chasing Moving at the Speed of Creativity

Wednesday night I posted “Webstreaming Storm Trackers” to the
ISTEconnects blog, and noted how webstreaming technologies along with
more pervasive cell tower connectivity is empowering a new generation of
storm trackers / storm chasers to broadcast “live” from the field as severe
weather hits local communities. Actual storm spotters, in contrast to amateur
storm chasers, perform a vital role during severe thunderstorms in providing
on-site reporting about suspected tornados which have a characteristic,
tornadic radar signature.

Clearly CNN producers know this, and although the CNN interviewer makes a
statement at the end about viewers not endangering themselves to get
footage for iReports, the implicit message here is, “This is exactly what we
are looking for when it comes to citizen-produced media and journalism.” In
some respects, I think it is unfortunate CNN chose to broadcast and amplify
these moments of foolishness and poor judgement by Michael Ambrosia, since
the rebroadcast of his video will likely encourage more people (probably
young folks) to go out and attempt similar videography near tornados. This is
a grim prediction, but I strongly suspect it is only a matter of time before we
hear a news report about a tornado chaser with a flash-based camcorder
who gets killed because s/he got too close to the storm. I hope that will not
be the case, but it seems we’re on that sort of trajectory.



Irresponsible Media Storm Chase Practices

As more and more chasers head out to the plains each spring to "feast on
the smorgasbord of atmospheric violence," the roadways get more crowded
and hazardous near storms. This is a well-known trend, discussed in several
other forums. Yes, there are irresponsible bozos out there who have no
business chasing, and who don't represent some TV station. However, we
want to spotlight a particularly dangerous trend of behavior we see among
those in the broadcast media who cover severe storms for their newscasts.

The "science-obsessed" family of Falcon Heene, the missing Colorado boy
believed to have been carried away in a homemade balloon Thursday, were
featured in an episode of 'Wife Swap' in the past year.

On ABC's site for the show, the Heenes are described as a "storm-chasing,
science-obsessed" family of five. "When the Heene family aren't chasing
storms, they devote their time to scientific experiments that include looking
for extraterrestrials and building a research-gathering flying saucer to send

The plant, the core of which is a Fissionator 1952 Slow-Fission Reactor, is poor and badly maintained, largely due to owner Montgomery Burns' miserliness, especially considering having over 342 violations and bringing the plant up to code would cost $56 million. The plant itself has come close to a meltdown several times. Its safety record is appalling, with various episodes showing luminous rats in the bowels of the building, pipes and drums leaking radioactive waste, the disposal of waste in a children's playground, plutonium used as a paperweight, cracked cooling towers (fixed in one episode using a piece of chewing gum), skeletons in the basement, dangerously high Geiger counter readings around the perimeter of the plant, flashing red Alert signs being ignored by employees, the creation of a mutant subspecies of three-eyed fish and even a giant spider. In one episode it was revealed that the Emergency Exits are simply painted on. In the opening credits a bar of some radioactive substance is trapped in Homer's overalls and later disposed of in the street, and eaten by Otto.

Homer has showed some prowess, averting nuclear disasters three times in the episodes Homer Defined and King-Size Homer, though in the latter the disaster nearly occurring in the first place. In Homer Defined, he touched the right button without looking, averting the meltdown. But when they discovered Homer did it without looking, he was in disgrace. In King-Size Homer he only saved the plant because he was too fat, but Mr. Burns offered to get rid of his fat for saving Springfield.

However, Antonia Coffman, Groening's publicist, has said that the Springfield plant's design is generic and that "the Springfield Nuclear Power plant was not based on the Trojan Plant or any other power plant in the country." Trojan Nuclear Power Plant opened in 1976 and was infamous for its poor construction and maintenance, resulting in steam generator leaks which ultimately caused the plant to close in 1993 (although other plants replaced theirs). The cooling tower of the Trojan nuclear power plant was finally demolished on May 21, 2006.

Hemp "Eats" Chernobyl Waste, Offers Hope For Hanford

An explosion at a nuclear reactor on April 26th, 1986 in Chernobyl, Ukraine created the world's worst nuclear disaster - so far.

The blast heavily contaminated agricultural lands in a 30 km radius around the reactor. The few people still living there must monitor their food and water for radiation. However the combination of a new technology (phytoremediation) and an old crop (industrial hemp) may offer the Ukraine a way to decontaminate it's radioactive soil.

In 1998, Consolidated Growers and Processors (CGP), PHYTOTECH, and the Ukraine's Institute of Bast Crops began what may be one of the most important projects in history - the planting of industrial hemp for the removal of contaminants in the soil near Chernobyl.

CGP is an ecologically-minded multinational corporation which finances the growing and processing of sustainable industrial crops such as flax, kenaf, and industrial hemp. CGP operates in North America, Europe and the Ukraine.

PHYTOTECH (see webpage: Web hosting, domain name registration and web services by 1&1 Internet ) specializes in phytoremediation, the general term for using phyto (plants) to remediate (clean up) polluted sites. Phytoremediation can be used to remove radioactive elements from soil and water at former weapons producing facilaties. It can also be used to clean up metals, pesticides, solvents, explosives, crude oil, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and toxins leaching from landfills.

Plants break down or degrade organic pollutants and stabilize metal contaminants by acting as filters or traps. PHYTOTECH is conducting feild trials to improve the phytoextraction of lead, uranium, cesium-137, and strontium-90 from soils and also from water.

Founded in 1931, the Institute of Bast Crops is now the leading research institution in the Ukraine working on seed-breeding, seed-growing, cultivating, harvesting and processing hemp and flax.

The Bast Institute has a genetic bank including 400 varieties of hemp from various regions of the world.

"Hemp is proving to be one of the best phyto-remediative plants we have been able to find," said Slavik Dushenkov, a research scienst with PHYTOTECH. Test results have been promising and CGP, PHYOTECH and the Bast Institute plan full scale trials in the Chernobyl region in the spring of 1999.

Industrial hemp is not a drug. Unlike its cousin marijuana, industrial hemp has only trace amounts of THC - the chemical that produces the high. In 1973, the Department of the Interior and Department of Health and Agriculture of the former USSR issued an ultimatim to the Institute of Bast Crops - either create non-psycoactive varities of hemp or stop cultivating hemp. So, scientists at the institute created an industrial hemp plant containing only minute traces of THC. Modern testing in Canada confirmed the low THC content of the Bast Institute's hemp.

New technologies in hemp harvesting and processing are also being developed at the Institute whose library contains more than 55,000 volumes mainly on hemp-growing and flax-growing.

Chernobyl may seem distant, but the EPA estimates that there are more than 30,000 sites requiring hazardous waste treatment throughout the U.S. including Hanford and Three Mile Island.

Phytoremediation with industrial hemp could be used at many of these sites. Unfortunantly, the U.S. government refuses to legalize the cultivation of industrial hemp and clings to the obsolete myth that it is a drug.
