The number of people who want to legalize pot is growing, but those who want to keep it illegal are still in the majority. If the California initiative passes, that should encourage more of the nation to legalize it after the positive results become apparent in a few years. If enough states do it, I'm sure the fed will follow.

Breckenridge CO

Breckenridge Colorado is a great town. I was there the entire summer of 2003 as a member of the National Repertory Orchestra and it is truly one of those towns where the feeling of true freedom is so thick you can cut it with a knife. No fear of leaving doors unlocked, no fear of getting arrested for openly smoking in the park... it is of course a breathtakingly picturesque town in the mountains as well. I can imagine Jon Stewart in Half Baked going "Have you ever experienced Breckenridge CO.... on weed?? Oh, dude, it's so trippy man, the mountains..."

I honestly think the best america can shoot for is a de facto legalization through medical marijuana, because there is a nations treatise, Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1961. And that one is not likely to change for longer than you can imagine, the next meeting to discuss drugs will be in 2019 and even then it will not change either.

People should stop splitting into different groups like pot legalization groups, pot decriminalization groups and medical pot groups, instead they should come to a conclusion on what is more likely to pass based on laws and technicalities, because begging for it won't make it happen.

The real sad part to all of this...

This story focuses on the "drug issue" due to the way too many years of prohibition. Breckenridge is mainly a ski town which is the main industry there. That lasts about 6 months out of the year. They do get summer visitation which has dwindled due to fuel costs of travel.

It would be great if the initiative passed was like the one we supported in Colorado in 1992, which foucused on all aspects of the plant. They could be growing, harvesting, and manufacturing hemp products like the rest of the world could. Kudos to the town though for the message sent. The 27% who didn't support the initiative should move out.
