Marijuana substitute spreading to Northeast

Marijuana substitute spreading to Northeast | courierpostonline.co m | Courier-Post

Three Delaware residents were taken to the hospital over the weekend after smoking an herbal marijuana substitute, prompting police to issue a warning about the relatively new substance that has cropped up in the state.
Sold commercially as an incense or potpourri under the names K2 or Spice -- Blaze, Red X Dawn, Zohai, Gemini, Yucatan Fire -- it is marketed as an herbal product and labeled "not for consumption."
It generally is sold in head shops as well as tobacco and convenience stores and on the Internet. When smoked, it gives the user a marijuana-like high, experts said.
"While the herbs may be natural, the chemicals they are spraying them with are certainly not," said Calvina Fay, executive director of the Drug Free America Foundation and Save Our Society From Drugs. "That's the danger. It's different chemicals and different levels of toxicity. Just because something is an herbal product doesn't mean it's not harmful."
She also said it is four times more potent than marijuana.
Two Seaford men and a woman suffered the short-term effects of the substance, which include increased heart rate, loss of consciousness, paranoia, hallucinations and psychotic episodes. Less is known about K2's long-term side effects.
They arrived to find the 24- and 22-year-old men and 18-year-old woman experiencing trouble breathing and elevated heart rates. They also lacked motor skills and were vomiting. They bought the marijuana subsitute over the Internet.
"These kids were very, very sick," Flood said.

Thats just part of the article, but you get the idea.
the US makes perfect sense! keep a natural, generally low-risk, therapeutic/medicinal herb like marijuana illegal, and flood the markets with cat nip sprayed with chemicals that we know little about! its like weed (marijuana substitute?) but more dangerous! perfect logic there! its nice to see we're in safe hands.

hmmmm... 4x more potent than marijuana?

ive never tried spice, but from what ive heard it makes you kinda tired and groggy. also, just want to point out that the person quoted and the organizations that are represented are obviously anti-drugs including marijuana. heres a quote from an article from Save Our Society From Drugs called "Victory In Massachusetts!"

Quote:
Victory in Massachusetts!

Through our aggressive efforts we have assured that HB 2160, a bill that sought to legalize marijuana under the guise of medicine, and HB 2929, a bill that sought to legalize the possession, sale, and cultivation of marijuana as well as establish a regulation program, will not move forward in the 2010 legislative session!
Save Our Society From Drugs | Save Our Society From Drugs

so, how does calvina fay know spice is "4x more potent than marijuana"? wheres the study proving this? also just want to be clear, not defending spice, cause i never tried it, and if its really as dangerous as they're making it out to be, then it should be avoided. but really, this is just being used by ppl like calvina fay (look her up by the way, she's a real piece of work) for their pro drug war propaganda crap.

the dude at the smoke shop said spice diamond tests positive on a drug test but he couldnt remember what it came up as. he said not thc though.. SKETCH!

He's lying. Although some blends have been known to contain HU210, which is controlled but I doubt it'll show up on a test. That hash/oil arrest is all outta the way?

Basically it's either jwh018, 073, 019, 200, 250, or CP 55940

dozens of brands. Tried one from eBay. Pretty good but not worth the price. Much easier to use pure stuff.

I bought some spice, works, but not as good. Had to try it. Definitely not the same. You can do too much apparently, opposed to the real deal. Scared of what the long term effects are.

Ive tried a few types now. Im job hunting and after failing a piss test, im not taking the risk of the real thing right now (hopefully soon). I tried K2 summit, and it was alot like weed, but in all the wrong ways. It was a decent heady high, followed by pretty bad anxiety. Maybe i smoked too much. It had a blends of several herbs, assumingly sprayed with JHW-018. It had a definite effect, but it was a little too intense, and left me feeling like crap. It kinda reminded me of when i first started smoking weed, but not in a great way.
Another "brand" i have tried is Kindspice. they sell it at our head shop, so i tried it. Ended up getting more online (and way cheaper). its nice. It is similar to weed, kinda mellow, not overly long lasting, but a nice light high. Tolerance seems to build up pretty quickly though. like within less than a week it was taking quite a bit more to feel it. Once im in a position to smoke MJ, i might still buy kindspice at times. its pretty nice. though , i wouldnt call it a sub for MJ, just a different high.

JWH-018 is a CB full agonist I believe. So yea it is more potent then THC at those receptor sites, but to compare the two is foolish. It's apples to oranges. JWH has a different high, the geek is completely different. It also has a scary part to it's chemical structure see that napthalene ring? That can be a pharmacuetical no, no, and can lead to carcinogenic metabolites, but I'm no expert.

If your going to use synthetic blends I hope you understand that cannabis is verified to be safe and medicinal, while compounds like JWH-XXX, WIN-XXX, etc haven't been tested in even animal models sufficiently. I wouldn't be surprised if lab rats got tumors from JWH but I don't have any studies supporting that, so I should keep my mouth shut.

I toyed with the pure compound for a week or so and some enhanced passionflower. It was worth the experimentation simply because I got 250mgs for free but I ended up flushing it even though I had no means of getting cannabis for a month or two ahead. THC, CBD's, and CBN's are my home-boys.

Nothing will ever beat smoking ganja, and its been time tested. Jester's right, that herbal substitute shit will likely end up killing someone.
