Obama being born in Hawaii [the 50th state], is the first president to within his lifetime to not have a new state added to United States.

Do you think the USA should actively pursue turning Territories like Puerto Rico into States, or any other country/region that, with consent, would want to join the Union?

Do you think any country would want to join the US, like how many would like to join the EU?

as long as the federal government is involved as much as it is with every thing states do, we cant support much more. every government agency is already overbudget. having to build/employ whole branches of government elsewhere is never gonna pay for itself in taxes. dmvs, post offices, social services(child abuse ppl), courts, cops, politicians, state capital building plus a few thousand ppl to work in it. plus most of the business of these territories is tourism from the united states. so what do we gain besides more boxes shaded our color on maps

We can't afford to bailout PR anymore than we already do. So I voted no. In the future, sure. Now is totally the wrong time.

On the flip side: people do know that people from PR can and do serve and die for our country in the military? This and they are not a state? One must question why?

According to Glenn Beck the vote was given to Puerto Ricans 3 times before and they repeatedly voted against becoming a state. But this is what he said:

First the vote was posed: Do you want to become a state?

And now the vote is going to be posed: Do you want to keep the status quo?

A trick question. I don't know. I don't care really.

Look at europe. they had it under control being a 12-state union.

then they brought in all these Eastern european economies and things got out of hand (financially speaking) for a 27 country union.

Even turkey now wants to be a part of the EU (they wont let em, but thats another story).

Keep america with 50 states. Its already difficult as is. the federal gvmnt has to support plenty of bankrupt states (Cali, puerto rico, etc) imagine having to bail out more...

You think the good old capitalist. Mr USA would bail us out without taking back much more than they give?

To think that you guys bail us out is absurd, but you'd have to be involved in our politics to understand, your "bailout" is just chump change compared with what the USA takes back in all sorts of ways, its not bailout, its an investment, plus, most of what you guys send goes through the trickle down process and almost none gets to the people.

Puerto Rico is a territory of the united states because they invaded us with blazing cannons in 1898, the problem is our people are divided, some want to stay as it is, a territory where congress gets the final say in any issue, the other half want statehood because they say we'll get the same benefits as the states, and we have a small minority who support independence, but that small minority knows it can't win so they support the non-statehood side in the referendums and so 3 times statehood has been voted against by our people.

We do die in your wars, not because we like to, but because we are pretty much forced to do it, you know we BELONG to the USA, if they say jump we have to jump.

that depends what you consider "quite a while". my grandparents have seen a few in their lifetime.

we are on our 7th president and 10th term to not use the draft so thats quite a while at least to me. the last guy drafted was in june 1973 people think

Without googling , I don't think anyone got drafted in 1973. That was the first year of the all volunteer army.

It doesn't matter how many states we have since states rights are ignored by the federal government. I think we'd have more rights if EVERY state seceded from the union.

I didn't say we are obliged to serve(right now) but our living conditions pretty much force a large quantity of our citizens to enlist due to lack of any other source of income(+16% unemployment), among many other factors.

And while its true the draft hasn't been activated in a few years, its also true that it can be activated any time Uncle Sam desires, its just that Sam doesn't need it because propaganda and poverty tend to do the job pretty well.
