Thumbs down Big Brother is moving to act on prepaid cell phones

FOXNews.com - Lawmakers seek to crack down on prepaid cell phones that abet criminal and terror suspects

NEW YORK (AP) — Alarmed by the use of hard-to-track prepaid cell phones by terror suspects, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer and Texas Sen. John Cornyn have introduced legislation requiring consumers to produce identification before buying such phones.

The bill has been praised by law enforcement and has bipartisan support, even as civil liberties groups have raised privacy concerns and some terror experts say it won't deter bad behavior.

Schumer, a Democrat, and Cornyn, a Republican, are hoping to schedule hearings on the bill through the Judiciary Committee. Schumer has urged Attorney General Eric Holder to back the measure.

Prepaid phones can be a lifeline for people with limited incomes or poor credit, allowing them to purchase a device and a limited amount of calling time without commiting to a costly contract. Phone companies sold $16 billion worth of prepaid cell phones last year, and the devices are hugely popular in both the U.S. and countries around the world.

But since the phones can be purchased anonymously and are thrown away after use, they've long been a favored tool of drug dealers, gang members and even white-collar criminals looking to cover their tracks.

There is no bones about it, the US government hates anonymity (except for themselves).

If the masses don't wake up, at this rate it won't take long to pass a legislation to require an ID to buy toilet paper, or food at McD's, or any other shit like that.

Oh wait, its to deter "terrorists", that makes sense giving away more freedoms in order to be safe. Duh.

We've been having the same law fo two or three years already , for every communications device or a prepaid sim card we have to show a n ID and fill out a form.

lame

wont be long till your legally mandated to carry state id and social everywhere you go, you know, for your own protection.
society will crush the individual. its governments job to protect society, without regard to the individual, only when the people fight back can a good balance be maintained.

Who is aware that all these news about ID problems recently are meant to create debate on the issue among the "barbaric hordes"(us) so that they will accept say, state id? National ID? a chip perhaps?

I can imagine the campaign: Get through ID lines faster with the prepaid chip implanted express line.

OMG BRILLIANT PLAN!!

And then once you do fill out those forms some government agent will "accidentally" leave the whole fracking thing in their car, only to have it broken into and all that paperwork will be stolen once again...

The states really need to step it up and remind the Federal government that they are the servants of the people, with out the states there is no United States federal government... 9th and 10th amendments need to be asserted ASAP...

I was in a long slow line at walmart one day and there was this couple in front of me wishing that they could do that. They were saying "if we just had our accounts implanted then they could just electronically charge us as we walked out the door". I don't know if they were joking or what, but I just shook my head.

no, the whole ascetic is depressing, from the mass commercialization of all that is plastic, to the filtered air that is supposed to induce the right frame of mind to buy, the blue on white color scheme with happy faces everywhere to remind you to smile at the supposed "savings", to the un-friendly geriatrics acting as door people who are a metal detector away from being airport security, to the blobs behind the registers, and finally to the swine and cattle filtering their way through the isles in perfect Synchronization as if all their schooling was to aid in the "selection" process of which detergent is the best, the one with bounty or freebrese...

Fuck the Feds. Where there is a will there is a way. They are like the entertainment industry who can not keep up with technology so they attempt to put in place these stupid laws that do nothing except effect EVERYONE and annoy EVERYONE. Fuck them, the Feds.

Is this really about terrorism? Or just scare tactics to erode OUR 4th Amendment rights further? Rhetorical question of course. People need to stand up against this shit. People have become so apathetic it's pathetic. Or they have forgotten everything they learned in history (college level).
