this was the first comment on an article about the oil spill, made me think of ootf....


WHEN ALL THE OIL IS SUCKED OUT OF THE EARTH, IN ABOUT 100 YEARS, THERE WILL BE HUGE CAVITIES IN THE EARTH UNDER THE OCEAN. THE OIL, WHICH LUBES AND COOLS THE EARTH IS ALL BURNT UP, THE WATER IN THE OCEAN WILL POUR INTO THE EARTH AND GET EVAPORATED BY ALL THE LAVA, AND OUR PLANET WILL IMPLODE IN A SMOULDERING MESS AND WE WILL ALL DIE.
YAY, WELL I HOPE ALL THE OIL EXECS ARE BUILDING THEMSELVES A ROCKET TO THE MOON TO AVOID THE END. HOPEFULLY THEY HAVE FIGGURED OUT HOW TO LIVE ON THE MOON.

I talked to a dude recently who believed this exact thing: that oil was some kind of cooling system for the earth. He also believed adamantly in the abiotic theory of petroleum, which postulates that the hydrocarbons from oil are not from biological material, but have seeped up from deeper within the earth. This theory, while not disproved, has little support from the available evidence. Also, since there is no heat exchange process occuring with the oil, as it rests in large reservoirs, I can't see how it could act in a cooling capacity.

Honestly, I am stunned by the absurd shit that people will believe.

The prevailing theory is that oil is a product of biological material subjected to years of heat and pressure, deep within the earth, causing chemical conversions that result in petroleum. Since people who think oil is renewable are MADE of biological material, I think it behooves us to prove to them that they are, in fact, right.

This isn't entirely true.
It only has "little support" in the US/UK crowd.
This crowd, incidentally, pushes the "peak oil" fear that steadily increases the price of oil.

Russia, on the other hand, has shown that "it's" theories are equally valid and have drilled oil where "western" companies have dismissed ideas of drilling because it doesn't conform with our theories.
