bravo, obama backs "mosque" project

Obama Breaks Silence, Backs NYC Mosque Project
Insists Muslims Have Same Rights as Anyone Else

by Jason Ditz, August 13, 2010

Finally breaking his administration’s official silence on the matter, President Obama today insisted that he supports the so-called Ground Zero mosque, insisting that Muslims have “the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws,” adding that he believes they have the same rights as anyone else.

The mosque had been backed by New York Mayor Bloomberg, but angrily opposed by a number of people who insist that the community center just blocks away from the site of the 9/11 attack is a violation of “sacred” ground.

Efforts by opponents of the site to get an existing building, a former Burlington Coat Factory covered in graffiti, declared a “landmark” have failed so far, but have sparked further protests and lawsuits.

The fight over the New York mosque has sparked similar battles in other states, with locals trying to oppose other mosques in other cities on general principle. Locals have denounced mosque plans in Tennessee, Wisconsin, California, and Michigan, usually starting with complaints about traffic but eventually escalating into denunciations of Muslims in general.

For crying out loud, it's even a Sufi based/led Centre as well isn't it? It doesn't get much less threatening that a whirling dervish.

Rumi isn't the beginning and end of Sufi-Muslims, but he's certainly a good case study of the practice.

Substitute 'Dispensary' for mosque and 'school' for 'sacred ground'.

That'll get the potheads' attention.

I've read where it's some kind of community center, that's why I put mosque in quotations. It shouldn't matter anyway. We've sunk so low.

Right on dude, you're right about community centre.

I think it's actually the best place to put it, because I'm not putting values on people who visit ground zero, but for instance, my Dad and his Wife, who are medics and firefighters made a hajj there to pay tribute to the fallen comrades. ( omg I used Islamic and Communist references in the same sentence ) And they are straight up pissed at Muslims, although they will admit they have 'known a couple good ones' YEAH....I bet its all the Muslims they've met in their life, which is exactly why having some positive exposure would be great. I find that most people don't like things based on never having experienced them. ie.... My old high school buddy who HATES everything, except gay people, because his Uncle who he looks up to is gay.

Up with hopes down with dopes!!

Obama is absolutely right on this one.
Christian & Jewish Americans were not the only Americans who died on 9/11.
Nor, for that matter, are they the only members of the NYPD & NYFD.
For the record, Muslims have been part of America since the 17th century.

"America is the greatest country in the world."

the problem isnt people not being exposed to it sage, theres already hundreds of mosques in NYC and they offered the people building it a new location for free and they wouldnt even go to the meeting and hear about it. they only want to do this because it will make us look like shit for giving in. and if we dont give in then we look like shit for blocking them. its win win for them so we should just block it and save some shred of dignity.

Who is We?

What is dignity?

I think some one said it best that no one would be bitching if they wanted to build a Church across the street from the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building Site in Oklahoma.

And I doubt there is much protest over Zen Temples in Honolulu, Hawaii either.

I'm just glad they weren't trying to build an anchor baby center. Whew!

I think the "they" is more defined than the "we". Sadly.

In my sentences I asked who is we and would they, meaning the we, be pissed etc etc....

I remember the old snoopy comics of the WW1 flying ace and the we/they map, but in this case they is a pronoun to the we's.

Plainly, I'm assume we is all of uh'Murica?

I think this is beyond politically incorrect. I mean granted, Al Queada isn't the muslim faith. However if you wanted to piss off a lot of ignorant America lover's this is exactly what you'd do. Obama is a complete dumb ass in my opinion. Someone shot Martin Luther King and he actually did good things for the people.

It's possible that the centre is being put there in an apologetic manner?

Like up here in Canada, I tell people I'm from the States and then 'then KNOW me' and then I fall into the crapper and talk about how I regret what my home country has done in other parts of the world and too itself.

So I can only imagine that people of faith feel similarly.
