Nigel Kennedy, the self-proclaimed “bad boy of classical music”, has been questioned by police after a drugs raid on a party in his five-star hotel.

The award-winning violinist is alleged to have hosted a raucous late night celebration in his suite after performing at a festival in the Bavarian town of Bad Wörishofen.

Police who raided neighbouring rooms after complaints from other hotel guests found evidence that heroin and cannabis had been smoked on the premises.

Two people are expected to be charged with drugs offences. Officers are understood to have questioned Kennedy, 53, but the musician’s manager insisted that no drugs were found in his room and he was not facing charges.

Widely considered one of the finest ever British musicians, Birmingham-born Kennedy has shaken the musical establishment with his outlandish dress sense and outspoken criticism of classical traditions. His interpretation of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in the 1980s remains the best selling classical record of all time.

He has previously admitting smoking marijuana to help him unwind after concerts, adding that “cocaine and hashish are as popular with classical performers as in other sections of society”.

German police confirmed that they raided rooms at Steigenberger Sonnenhof Hotel at 3.15am on Sunday, after reports of loud noise and concerns that “illegal substances” were being consumed.

Officers found no evidence of criminal activity in Kennedy’s suite, but are understood to have found equipment used to smoke illegal drugs in rooms rented out by other guests at the party.

Terri Robson, Kennedy’s manager, said: “Nigel and members of the Czech orchestra were celebrating the end of the festival with a party in Nigel’s suite.

“It may have got a little bit out of hand, but when police arrived they found nothing in Nigel’s rooms.”

Peter Messner, director of the hotel, denied some local media reports which claimed the suite had been “trashed.”

Kennedy remained in Germany to rehearse for a performance with his Orchestra of Life in Dortmund on Friday.
