As a reaction to this cascade of tragic news, newspaper columnist Dan Savage launched a popular YouTube campaign called “It Gets Better.” The project contains thousands of videos featuring celebrities like Savage himself, Scissor Sisters lead singer Jake Shears, “Glee” star Chris Colfer and “Project Runway” personality Tim Gunn, along with gay and lesbian teens and adults from across the country. Many of them tell personal, often heart-wrenching stories about their own experiences to show gay teens that life gets better after school.
I think this says it all. Being gay has become much more accepted, even hip in some cases, in america over the last 10-20 years. It's a whole new world for gay people. The problem is, there is always some element that reacts to changes like this with a backlash of some kind. I think this accounts for a great deal of the bullying. It's immature kids that in all likelihood come from environments that are not very welcoming of the new acceptance of homosexuality in our culture. And while their parents and other "mature" influences aren't engaging in this kind of direct harassment, the kids, with their limited maturity and excess hormones, are.

This is how the world changes, unfortunately. The good thing is, is once you grow up, you don't have as many immature people like that to deal with, and things calm down some.

I think the point of the article is centered around the day of remembrance last week, when people donned purple attire in support and awareness to the issue bullying, it's effect of LGBTQ teens and a comment on the cultures are large in our society.

Just a marker to bring the issue forward.

Would have posted something myself about it had I not been on the road.

While the post doesn't directly touch on said remembrance I feel the timing does not seem coincidental.

I'm sure this is no secret, but for those who don't know:

October 20th: Spirit Day - Wear PURPLE!

Quote:
It’s been decided! On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the LGBT youth who have committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes and schools.

PURPLE represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality.

We want to thank Brittany McMillan for creating this event!
The Eastern Echo Mobile

Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors and schools.

RIP
Tyler Clementi, Seth Walsh, Justin Aaberg, Raymond Chase, Asher Brown, Cody J. Barker, Harrison Chase Brown, Caleb Nolt, Billy Lucas, Jeanine Blanchette, and Chantal Dube.

Spread The Message. It is important that all this hate be stopped.

When our own government officials condemn people for being gay as being wrong, well, you then get it from every direction. Those politicians are equally responsible in my book and should be ashamed of themselves as they justify the hatred (and even encourage it) and add to gays feelings of being inferior to us "normal" people, whatever that's supposed to be.

That's so gay.

(kidding, just suprised no one said it yet!)

On this subject, social evolution seems to be not that much faster than physical evolution, but at least it's happening.

some people just don't want to believe in evolution, there's not much you can do about that

Excellent post.

I don't like that hypocrite Dan Savage and how he'll tell GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, Trans) youth and teens that "It gets better! Ignore the bullies!" but then he trashes adult bisexuals and Trans people.

One organization that's good is Home | The Trevor Project The Trevor Project because it tells kids to actually tell their parents, teachers, and school admins about the bullying and harassment and doesn't tell them to ignore it and just think about how "it gets better".

There's also GLESEN GLSEN: Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network: Home which does the same thing.

I agree that most politicians even our President with his "God's in the Mix" statement are against people who are bisexual and gay/lesbian and don't seem to understand how if you're not heterosexual you're a 2nd class citizen in your own country.
