I think if Washington State banned it, and I lived 15 minutes from Idaho, and I have a Backpage account, that I should be going into business.
My dad did similar back in the day when you couldn't get Coors beer in some states. He was constantly shipping that stuff to friends and relatives all over the country. One time my cousin and his Huey crew stole their chopper and flew it to our town. He cold called my dad and had him bring like 20 cases up to the airport. My mom was out doing whatever moms did on a Saturday afternoon in 1970, so my dad loaded me up in his GMC truck to make sure some Army guys got aid and comfort. When my dad died some of us got together with the preacher so he could get some stories and anectdotes for the service. I was pretty quiet until the padre asked me for any stories. I started telling that one, and as I went on my aunt (said cousin's mom) is just staring at me...with a look like I just fingered her cat. When I was done she basically told me it never happened. My sister and other aunt popped up and said it had. Her look was priceless, because she'd never heard about it before. My cousin had a pretty good Army career and retired by 45. She went on about what would've happened if they'd gotten caught. It was a really classic moment. Even better was when my cousin reamed my ass after my dad's service for tattling to his mom. I seriously doubt I'd have gotten through that week if I hadn't unwittingly made some folks in my family squirm. |

I dunno. He pretty much says it as it is. Some people think taxes are cool, some people think they're gay.
In this case, how would taxing 4Loko or whatever it is help the situation? Would it stop anyone from buying and using and/ or abusing the product? Or would it just put money into the coffers of an oppressive government that frankly can't wisely spend the money they already take from us at the point of a gun? Liquor is already taxed, so why are there so many drunkards? If the addition of caffiene to alcohol makes a so much more insidious combination, why stop with taxing it? Make it illegal. But what would that look like? What stops someone from mixing Red Bull with some Stoli? Both are easily acquired...and taxed. At the end of the day, some kids took one for the team. They've shown us that mixing a stimulant with a deppressive in mass quantities is kind of a knuckleheaded idea.

by taxing it they reduce it's affordability, thus reducing consumption
the most cynical tax is the one on cigs if i quit it means more poor kids go without healthcare funding

Banning them is ridiculous. Stupid people will be stupid regardless of what substance they do or don't use and misbehave. I mean for fucks sake even if these things were banned people would just go back to vodka and redbull and it's ilk if thats the kind of buzz they desired. Kids will be kids basically.

I agree with it being a bad way to finance something.
You don't find the irony in cynically believing that the one sin tax that affects you is a "cynical tax"? The others have good intentions, making it expensive therefor reducing consumption. But the one that affects you makes you keep smoking to pay for poor chillun's healthcare? Wow. This is fun mental jacking off, but it's just that. Alcohol and caffiene are both taxed and readily available. Taxing this kind of pre- made drink (or banning it for that matter) is just pissing in the wind. This is a relatively new product, but it's based on a combination of two products that people have been mixing for years. No one has quit drinking because alcohol taxes are too high...which they are. And no one has stopped drinking Starbucks because Washington State has an oppressively high sales tax. But slapping a fat tax on the combination will make you feel you've done something, that you're thinking right. Where do you spose the money that is taxed from this product would go? Roads? No, probably not. Helping feed old people? Doubt it. But you can bet it would go to some bloated bureaucrasy that will waste the lion's share of it. I frankly find it disturbing that some good hearted folks on this forum, which is based around the use of a substance that the government has been so tenacious in keeping illegal for little or no legitimate reasons, are more than happy to hand that very same government more powers over the daily lives of others. Prohibition doesn't work. Taxing percieved sins doesn't work. Stupid people will find ways of doing stupid things no matter what feel good legislation stands in their way. |

oh no, yhr only thing keeping me from stopping is addiction and lack of resolve i'm more concerened with the poor children
...anyways taxes and tarriffs on goods is far more equitable then taxing income, & the worst of all: property, which is totally based on speculation

I say ban them.
Who wants wired up drunks running around? They're funnier when they pass out and you can break out the sharpies.

You can't be Pro-Choice about pot and Anti-Choice about things you think are 'fairly dangerous' to you. There are many people that energy drinks don't represent any danger to all.
As Bearsy alluded to earlier anything can be dangerous to you, but there isn't an obvious amount of unstoppable danger with common everyday items and objects. It's only when I hold a tootsie pop the right way that I can rupture your eyeball. In the hands of crazy people... Guns can be extremely dangerous. Yep. When they are loaded and pointed at you. I might only get a blister on my trigger finger shooting the shit out of one at the range, though. Pianos. I bet given the chance, a crazy person would drop a piano on someone. . But I really like the sound of pianos so I will never vote for those to be banned. Tanks? No. You shouldn't just be able to have one of those. They shouldn't be accessible to just anyone and safely stored away from unattended admirers. You pretty much need another Tank to stop a Tank, or the median of a California Highway to stop a tank. Now what if it's a small town, and the small town only has one Tank? Some Jabroney Billy Bubba GTA's the Tank, Mama Mia, he wipes the town out. Energy Drinks? BFD. Say No to Tanks. |

alcohol prohibition still exists in many localities, "sin" taxes are a means of social engineering, and a states rights issue
