The Sex Crimes of Julien Assange

Given the breathlessness of U.S. media coverage, one would think that WikiLeaks’ Julien Assange was wanted for raping half the virgins in Sweden.

The reality is far less saucy. The New York Times summarized the charges against Assange:

According to accounts the women gave to the police and friends, they each had consensual sexual encounters with Mr. Assange that became nonconsensual. One woman said that Mr. Assange had ignored her appeals to stop after a condom broke. The other woman said that she and Mr. Assange had begun a sexual encounter using a condom, but that Mr. Assange did not comply with her appeals to stop when it was no longer in use. Mr. Assange has questioned the veracity of those accounts.

How many uncaptured war criminals are on Interpol’s target list? How many people accused of genocide? How many politicians are out and about who should be on the Interpol list for war crimes?

The U.S. government is busy screwing Americans and much of the world – and Interpol goes off hot and heavy seeking a broken condom culprit?

Guys, please don't tell Interpol about that time in college when I said I'd pull out, okay?

we would also be led to believe they captured him when in reality he turned himself in to deal with these charges.

I've never had a condom break. I'm trying to imagine at what point you or your partner might realize this. I was under the impression that you wouldn't know until after the fact.

^Damn dude tell enough threads about this

As a removed level of interest this could set an interesting precedent for the power differential of insistence on protection in intercourse.

If the gov'ts wanted this guy dead they'd just kill him or make the info he posted 'cause' a terrorists attack.

I can't say if this is 'real' or not, but imo, this could potentially really be demeaning these women's plight.

Seriously, wouldn't the gov't amp up the smear if they wanted to "ruin" this guy?

I do concur though that they haven't sought out other criminals.

Since he turned himself in though, I feel that either count or cause here is showing his credibility and character.

Okay, on topic...

Assange is basically a martyr for the cause at this point, the organization has grown beyond him and really most of the founders. They were but a swell before the crest.

I also really don't think it's the actual content of the documents that has American bungs in a rage, on the contrary it may be the lack of a smoking gun that is the most damning evidence of our governments mystical shroud of security and the 'war on terror' is little more than profiteering on the parts of those running the show while our legislature mucks about with mindless, trivial and unimportant shit (gay marriage, dont ask dont tell, all of this shit) in front of the people while our liberties are quietly restricted in the name of 'security' that is neither wanted or frankly needed.

What I find the most troubling about this whole case is the complete disconnect between the blogasphere and the television news, and the total agreement between all television news outlets.

When CNN, FOX, and CNBC are all in agreement in their condemnation of Julien Assange, but totally out of tune with opinion on the internet AND in the print media; I smell a rat. Why is there no mention of the levity of Assange's "sex crimes"?

In the absence of this information we naturally imagine the worse: Assange cruseing the streets of Sweden in a white van, abducting and raping young virgins.

Ellsberg: “EVERY attack now made on WikiLeaks and Julian Assange was made against me and the release of the Pentagon Papers at the time.”

WikiLeaks has teased the genie of transparency out of a very opaque bottle, and powerful forces in America, who thrive on secrecy, are trying desperately to stuff the genie back in. The people listed below this release would be pleased to shed light on these exciting new developments.

How far down the U.S. has slid can be seen, ironically enough, in a recent commentary in Pravda (that’s right, Russia’s Pravda): “What WikiLeaks has done is make people understand why so many Americans are politically apathetic … After all, the evils committed by those in power can be suffocating, and the sense of powerlessness that erupts can be paralyzing, especially when … government evildoers almost always get away with their crimes. …”

So shame on Barack Obama, Eric Holder, and all those who spew platitudes about integrity, justice and accountability while allowing war criminals and torturers to walk freely upon the earth. … the American people should be outraged that their government has transformed a nation with a reputation for freedom, justice, tolerance and respect for human rights into a backwater that revels in its criminality, cover-ups, injustices and hypocrisies.

Odd, isn’t it, that it takes a Pravda commentator to drive home the point that the Obama administration is on the wrong side of history. Most of our own media are demanding that WikiLeaks leader Julian Assange be hunted down — with some of the more bloodthirsty politicians calling for his murder. The corporate-and-government dominated media are apprehensive over the challenge that WikiLeaks presents. Perhaps deep down they know, as Dickens put it, “There is nothing so strong … as the simple truth.”

Sam Adams, Associates for Integrity in Intelligence, presented their annual award for integrity to Julian Assange on October 23.

Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence (SAAII) is a group of former CIA colleagues and other admirers of former intelligence analyst Sam Adams, who hold up his example as a model for those who would aspire to the courage to speak truth to power.

It's times like these I'm actually ashamed to be an American...

it's MY government that has started this all out onslaught on this guy under the pretense that what he is doing is illegal...yet no charges have been filed.

INSTEAD, we get slander against him in the form of supposed rape charges...

of course, he's not the first to embarrass the US propaganda machine and came up on the wrong side of it.

Daniel Ellsberg (born April 7, 1931) is a former United States military analyst who, while employed by the RAND Corporation, precipitated a national political controversy in 1971 when he released the Pentagon Papers, a top-secret Pentagon study of US government decision-making about the Vietnam War, to The New York Times and other newspapers.

As an editor of the New York Times was to write much later, these documents "demonstrated, among other things, that the Johnson Administration had systematically lied, not only to the public but also to Congress, about a subject of transcendent national interest and significance"
