Students have ruck with coppers over tuition fees

telegraph.co.uk/news/Tuition-fees-Coalition-wins-vote-as-violence-worsens-outside-Commons.html

It's still going on, the police charged them on horseback, the 'dents have been doing all right so far, draw on points I'd say.

lol at Prince Charles driving his Rolls through the crowd and getting covered in paint. Other than that, poor display of idiocy from most of the protestors.

^^yeah, camilla looked freaked.

...and for anyone in general...help me know why the students are pissed off. this is what i think i know. in europe, you don't have to pay for college because...the government pays for it...or most of it? and now, they have major budget drama and they have to cut that funding in turn, students have to pay for more of their higher education? in a nutshell anyway.

edit-
i know i can look into this myself, and i will...but it's always more fun/easy to read coming from you guys.

It was free for uk citizens back in the eighties and before but back then far less people went to university and you would have to be bright and pass hard exams to get accepted to uni.

Because they (first the tories then new labour) scrapped the (perfectly fine) o levels and replaced them with gcse's which any fool can pass, then dumbed down the A levels so they could massage the statistics to look good, now every fool wants to go to uni.
This has created big business for the universities but there isn't enough public money to fund it. So funding for students and their tuition fees has gradually been switched from grants to loans.

So it's bad for clever students from poor backgrounds.

On the other hand there are a lot of not very bright people going to uni to pointlessly study useless subjects.

We did have an excellent education system up until the eighties although some thought the grammar school system and streaming furthered class division, IDK.

Meh, I like riots in any way shape or form. More power to them.

But yeah I agree it's stupid to piss on memorials like that.

Seriously, if I wanted to I could just throw the next gay guy I come across right up against a wall and give him an anal assault and he wouldn't complain one bit.

FG's right. It was all pretty decent until the mid '80's and thatchers way kicked in. Everything was fucking free or heavily subsidized. Education was free, the books were free and the uniforms were subsidized. There was housing benifit for anyone over 16 and decent enough social security. Dentist was free so was all health care. Students got grants for study and were allowed to sign on over the summer.

but I guess that's all changed now, england is in serious decline, I left in the late eighties when it was alright if you worked but the streets were full of beggars and homeless. A new poor society was created............. ....

What they should have done is cut the funding for the pointless degrees. The rahs can afford to study art history out of their parents pockets anyway.

higher education is one of the most important things in an advanced culture. the higher the population with higher education, the higher the standard of living for everyone.

Access to higher ed is all about breaking down the rich / poor divide. Socialist governments will try to do this, conservative ones will try to limit the access and increase the divide.

Yeah I agree on the whole, most of them have no clear idea of the issues or if they do they didn't articulate it very well.
But they were promised there would be no rises in fees by the present government just before the recent election. Now they're elected it's one of the first things they did.
