Prenatal Marijuana Exposure and Neonatal Outcomes in Jamaica:
An Ethnographic Study
Although no positive or negative neurobehavioral effects of prenatal exposure were found at 3 days of life using the Brazelton examination, there were significant differences between the exposed and nonexposed neonates at the end of the first month. Comparing the two groups, the neonates of mothers who used marijuana showed better physiological stability at 1 month and required less examiner facilitation to reach an organized state and become available for social stimulation. The results of the comparison of neonates of the heavy-marijuana-using mothers and those of the nonusing mothers were even more striking. The heavily exposed neonates were more socially responsive and were more autonomically stable at 30 days than their matched counterparts. The quality of their alertness was higher; their motor and autonomic systems were more robust; they were less irritable; they were less likely to demonstrate any imbalance of tone; they needed less examiner facilitation to become organized; they had better self-regulation; and were judged to be more rewarding for caregivers than the neonates of nonusing mothers at 1 month of age.

Cannabis Prevents Brain Damage

Dr, Grinspoon, a proffesor and head of phychiatry at Harvard, was sworn in and testified by telephone from his home in Boston.

He was asked if there were differences between herbal and pharmaceutical medicines.

He said that unlike herbs, pharmaceuticals are subject to very stringent standards of approval, primarily because of the devestating birth defects that were caused in the fifties by thalidimide. Thalidimide was a relaxant, as was cannabis, but cannabis had been removed from the pharmacopia in 1941 as a result of the reefer madness scare tactics and the essential banning of hemp with the marijuana tax act of 1937.

Prior to that cannabis had been used as a sleep aid but it was difficult to get the dose right whereas pills made for consistent doses.
Cannabis has not been shown to cause birth defects. There was an extensive study done in Jamaica with cannabis using pregnant women. The point is that herbs do not and should not require the same standards as synthetics.

In 1957, the drug thalidomide was approved for use in Europe as a treatment for morning sickness caused by pregnancy. Thousands of women took the pills, assured by the drug maker that they were safe.

Unfortunately, the drugs had primarily been tested as a sleep aid for elderly patients -- not on pregnant women. By the time its tragic side effects were known, it was too late to help the than 12,000 babies born with severe birth defects.

Today, it is known that even one capsule of thalidomide can cause devastating defects, including the development of flipper-like limbs.

Yet, the Celgene Corporation has promoted the pill as a cancer treatment, despite warnings from the FDA.

The timing and types of pesticide exposures are critical determinants of reproductive outcomes, according to a recently published study by Canadian researchers. The study examined pesticide exposures based on recall by farm families and reported histories of spontaneous abortions among women living on the farms. The study found strong evidence that a woman’s exposure to pesticides in the three months prior to conception or in the month of conception significantly increased her risk of spontaneous abortion.

Hemp can also be grown without the pesticides that are necessary for cultivation of other textiles and paper products, such as cotton which requires large amounts of pesticides and today is the most polluting of all agricultural industries.
