Maybe the US was less adamant about sticking out it's neck as well?

And here to hoping for the safety of all people in this struggle and that peaceable ends are reached as soon as possible in less than perfect means.

All I can say is inconnectedness, mang.

Quote:
  • The concept of a peaceful community of nations had been outlined as far back as 1795, when Immanuel Kant’s Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch outlined the idea of a league of nations that would control conflict and promote peace between states. There, Kant argues for establishment of a peaceful world community not in a sense that there be a global government but in the hope that each state would declare itself as a free state that respects its citizens and welcomes foreign visitors as fellow rational beings. It is in this rationalization that a union of free states would promote peaceful society worldwide, therefore there can be a perpetual peace bound by the international community.

  • The forerunner of the League of Nations, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), was formed by peace activists William Randal Cremer and Frederic Passy in 1889. The organization was international in scope with a third of the members of parliament, in the 24 countries with parliaments, serving as members of the IPU by 1914. Its aims were to encourage governments to solve international disputes by peaceful means and arbitration and annual conferences were held to help governments refine the process of international arbitration
  • While the First World War was still underway, a number of governments and groups had already started developing plans to change the way international relations were carried out in order to prevent a repetition of the war. United States President Woodrow Wilson and his advisor Colonel Edward M. House enthusiastically promoted the idea of the League as a means of avoiding any repetition of the bloodshed seen in World War I, and the creation of the League was a centerpiece of Wilson's Fourteen Points for Peace. Specifically the final point provided: "A general association of nations must be formed under specific covenants for the purpose of affording mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial integrity to great and small states alike."
  • Before drafting the specific terms of his peace deal, Wilson recruited a team led by Colonel House to compile whatever information deemed pertinent in assessing Europe’s geo-political situation. In early January, 1918, Wilson summoned House to Washington and the two began hammering out, in complete secrecy, the President’s first address on the League of Nations which was delivered to an unsuspecting Congress on January 8, 1918.

Wilson's final plans for the League were strongly influenced by the South African Prime Minister, Jan Christian Smuts. In 1918 Smuts had published a treatise entitled The League of Nations: A Practical Suggestion. According to F.S. Crafford's biography on Smuts, Wilson adopted "both the ideas and the style" of Smuts.
Just a little cool back ground there I think..... seemed like a yearning for a long time.

Quote:
  • The League of Nations failed to prevent World War II (1939–1945). Because of the widespread recognition that humankind could not afford a Third World War, the United Nations was established to replace the flawed League of Nations in 1945 in order to maintain international peace and promote cooperation in solving international economic, social and humanitarian problems. The earliest concrete plan for a new world organization was begun under the aegis of the U.S. State Department in 1939. Franklin D. Roosevelt first coined the term 'United Nations' as a term to describe the Allied countries. The term was first officially used on 1 January 1942, when 26 governments signed the Atlantic Charter, pledging to continue the war effort. On 25 April 1945, the UN Conference on International Organization began in San Francisco, attended by 50 governments and a number of non-governmental organizations involved in drafting the Charter of the United Nations. The UN officially came into existence on 24 October 1945 upon ratification of the Charter by the five permanent members of the Security Council—France, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States—and by a majority of the other 46 signatories. The first meetings of the General Assembly, with 51 nations represented, and the Security Council, took place in Westminster Central Hall in London in January 1946.

The organization was based at the Sperry Gyroscope Corporation's facility in Lake Success, New York, from 1946–1952, before moving to the United Nations Headquarters building in Manhattan upon its completion.

I'm not so sure about the 'coat tail complaints' I tend to see it as pretty dang willing to step forward.

Iraq was a time when a different mix of assertiveness and restraint might have been practiced better.

In this case though:

I'm putting my guess on $$$$$$ as the weighty factor in not leading the way.

Apparently not. The neck seems to be well out there. Funny, Potus is like Tony Soprano. Has an ironclad alibi, being in Chile.

Mixed feelings here. I agree with you to a point. If that well dressed cocksucker in Tripoli (I'm not even going to try to spell his name) and his bad music loving sons accidently meet Allah, I'm pretty sure the world will be a better place. But should he not, this fuck has stood up to us many times over that last 3 decades. And for his last few years of being a rather docile member of the world community, he's still a serious dude that has little problem spilling blood.

I hope this goes quick and as advertised, but I can see it going south. And who knows the repercussions if it does? This fuck brought down an international commercial flight...on Christmas, fer fuck's sake. And he still lives. This is going to be interesting, folks.

^^^^^ Actually, I'm thinking of your "this isn't about money" thing. Pols are pols are pols. It may not be about dollars, which I'm certainly not going to say is the case, but it certainly isn't all humanitarian altrusim. There are things more valuable to a pol than money. If it was all about saving those people, this would have happened 10 days ago.

They're already saying the hospitals are full of civilian casualties. I'm waiting for the cardboard sign on a pile of rubble that says "Baby Milk Factory".

If nothing else, I'm glued to the news channels for the weekend. That might make me get my stuff ready for Hempfest.

I can see your itching for a fight... am I right?

I said that the US is NOT leading this because they don't have the money, which is not what you said back to me.

^^^^^ No, not itching for a fight. I looked at your op, and I must've not read it right. I still stand by the fact that pols are what they are, but I shouldn't have aimed it in your direction. Sorry bout that.

I'm having such an 80's deja vu. I mean, Wrestlemania is all booked with stupid 80's style gimmick matches. We've got the China Syndrome going on in Japan. And we're throwing down with Libya. Chrystler should be coming out with their new K Car next week.

Oprah, please. You jump into every political discussion. You might not throw elbows, but you still are right there. I love you for it, man.

We really should start a movement to bring back the Ks.

I might, but I don't really feel that I take myself as serious as you guys do

The way I see it, I'm more likely to speak up on a social issue that is getting political/media coverage, you'd be right there for sure, but I see them as HUMAN issues and wish they'd be void of political stance, dogmas and soap operatic life analysis.

Most of the time I hope I come off as campy or the Fool.

oh yea.....

Quote:
The K-cars (Dodge Aries, Plymouth Reliant, Chrysler LeBaron, Dodge 400, and, in Mexico, Dodge Dart) sold very well, selling between 280,000 and 360,000 every year from 1981 to 1988, and edging over 100,000 in their final year, 1989. The manual transmission provided acceleration of 0-60 mph in 10 seconds, while the automatic was between 13 and 14 seconds, similar to or better than most competitors, while gas mileage was rated by the EPA at 26 mpg city, 41 mpg highway with the manual transmission. All had a 100.1-inch (2.54 m) wheelbase. The overall length of the two and four-door models was 176 inches (4.5 m). The wagon was 0.2 inches (5.1 mm) longer. The vehicles had a approximate 14-gallon fuel tank. The coupe and sedan had approximately 15 cubic feet (0.42 m3) of luggage space; the wagons, 35 cubic feet (0.99 m3) with rear seat up and about 70 cubic feet (2.0 m3) when folded. Numerous improvements to the sound insulation and general feel were made in 1983; in 1985, the Reliant, Aries, and LeBaron received a facelift, with a rounded front fascia, smoother hood, and bigger taillights, accompanied by fuel injection on the 2.2 liter engine and a 2.5 liter engine replacing the arguably unreliable Mitsubishi 2.6.

They were also initially very profitable, and Chrysler chairman Lee Iacocca credited them with allowing the company to pay off its bankruptcy loans early.

^^^^^ They're boxy, but they're good.

The problem is everything is human, but it's still run by politics. Sad but true. I take it seriously, but try to inject my stupid humor into it, altho I like to think of myself as a foole. It's kind of like laughing to keep from crying.

Altho I have to admit now I'm a little shook up by the various events of the last month or so. I'm kind of starting to wonder if (insert your favorite apocolyptic nutjob here) is actually right. But at the same time I'm watching with rapt fascination because I'm such a current events/ history junkie. Trying to soak it all in because I know this period will be comparable to the Cuban Missile Crisis in my boy's poli- sci or history classes in high school or college. Either that or we'll be pushing a shopping cart through a post apocolyptic wasteland ala The Road.

It's the second time in my life that I actually enjoy watching good old Tomahawks cruising on their deadly path towards their targets, even though I know how destructive they are and how indiscriminate they kill, I still do think it's the right thing to do in this situation, just as was the right thing to do to bomb Serbia in the late nineties.

It stopped the war, it stopped Milosevic's genocidal agenda and it gave people a sense of hope when they stopped believing in just.

I'm really glad to see a fairly global alliance against a madman, feels like a renaissance of hope for the world, should do the same with Yemen, Syria, Bahrain, Oman and then deal with Israel...

That's good to hear Stulic. I feel like I'm almost alone in seeing the positive potential in what is happening right now, or at least talking about it, instead of getting wrapped up in 'the world falling apart'. The way I see it, we got some change on our hands. I hope for everyone's safety.

What's happening right now is a poorly thought out reponse with little regard to how it might end.
