California supreme court ruling on prison populations

Prison Ruling Roils California Budget Talks - WSJ.com

Says they gotta drop from 143K to 100K.

I'd like to note that 143K is not the total number of prisoners in California, just the number relevant to this case.

The overcrowding has been ruled to fall under cruel and unusual punishment since inmates are routinely denied medical treatment.

The majority of prisoners are parole violators and non violent offenders, also those who fall under Cali's famous '3 strikes' law.

People are criticizing this as a liberal court ruling and saying that budget cuts should instead be made from state employee benefits (like wisconsin) and the cutting of the light rail system currently in development.

I think budget problems are leading to some good changes in the prison system and the war on drugs that put so many people there.

This is good news.

I don't think that cutting some State workers jobs would be bad either Fair pay is good and I think they do alright by most standards.

But LAWD!!!!! don't make it harder to get to work.....

Crazy- all those non dangerous peeps in jail- just think of the money it costs and the lost revenue from them not working and paying taxes.

Cali is in some serious budgetary shit right now I believe, better pull their heads out their asses.

Budget crisis just proves how pitifully useless drug arrests are. Sucks it took bankrupting a state for people to realize this, but I'll take any goddamn victory at this point.

Good to hear they are considering cutting from the RIGHT place.

Critical Resistance
is an organization my Wife and I donate to and are members of.

Quote:
Mission Statement: "Critical Resistance seeks to build an international movement to end the Prison Industrial Complex by challenging the belief that caging and controlling people makes us safe. We believe that basic necessities such as food, shelter, and freedom are what really make our communities secure. As such, our work is part of global struggles against inequality and powerlessness. The success of the movement requires that it reflect communities most affected by the PIC. Because we seek to abolish the PIC, we cannot support any work that extends its life or scope."

Alliance takes Action with Prisoners across California

On Friday, August 6, 2010, prisoners, their family members, and supporters across California engaged in a day of fasting and solidarity actions to draw public attention to the need to reduce the State’s prison population and take serious steps towards changing California’s failed system of mass incarceration.

In August, 2009, a federal three-judge panel ordered the state of California to reduce the prison population by 44,000 to correct constitutional violations caused by extreme overcrowding. Instead, California filed an appeal against the ruling with the U.S. Supreme Court at taxpayer expense. The Supreme Court is expected to hear this case in October, 2010. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of prisoners continue to endure inhumane, illegal conditions, including extended periods in lockdown, separation from children, horrific medical care, and abuse from prison guards.

Ignoring the mandate of the three-judge panel, California’s bloated prison system – the largest in the country - continues to expand. Under Assembly Bill 900, tens of millions of dollars of new prison construction is being undertaken even while the state drastically cuts health, education and other basic community services that could help to insure true public safety.

On August 6th, Bay Area community members delivered a strong message to Mark Leno, Senate Public Safety Committee; Tom Ammiano, Assembly Public Safety Committee; Fiona Ma, Assemblywoman; and Senator Leland Yee (who all have offices in the State Building) that the prison population must be reduced now and California’s priorities must change.

Sponsored by the CURB Alliance

Californians United for a Responsible Budget (CURB) is a broad based statewide coalition of over 40 organizations committed to curbing prison spending by reducing the number of people in prison and closing prisons.

For more information, please go to www, curbprisonspendi ng.org

In addition to Critical Resistance, we're also members of the NAACP, both of these organizations have lobbied for prison reforms, and it's CR's only mission.

I'm not bragging, I'm just sharing this to spread some hope that when we try to change things that they will budge... even if it is only a little at a time.
