Political, philosophical and psychosocial reading material.

Hey guys, I was snooping around the Politics section recently and after looking through a couple of threads I've concluded that there are more than a couple very intelligent people here.

In the fall, I'll be going to college for film, and up until this point I've just sort of been coasting along doing film related shit and just looking to get out of high school.

I think a change is in order though, I'm wondering if you guys have a collection of books you've read or blogs you read that you think really helped you get a handle on any of the topics listed above.

No need to omit anything; I've found myself quite capable of reading and understanding all of the material that's been put in front of me. I just don't want to be blissfully ignorant anymore, and I think dedicating some time this summer to serious reading would make me a better person.

I hope the thread didn't come off as pretentious or anything, just thought a lot of you would be the right guys to ask.

Good documentaries are also good too if you've got them in mind.

The Power Of Nightmares, 3 part series from BBC. About the use of fear tactics. To put it blunt.

Inside Job, good opinion piece about the global credit crisis.

Videocrazy - Docu about berlesconis power in italy. crazy good.

Have fun buuuddy

a really good way to delve would be to go on wikipedia and start clicking on whatever you can think of that interests you. then you click on the links in the body of w/e article and that will bring you to even more information with more links to more information. tabbed browsing is quite useful in that adventure.

"the waking life" is a good movie/ doc about reality and some different philosophies that concern it. tis on the trippy side so its a good one to watch a few times.

donnie darko - also another philosopical head scratching film.

i always liked descarte, as far as classic philosophy goes. "i am a thinking thing" "what is it like to be a bat". these are lines from one of my favorites by descartes, but the name escapes me at the moment.

you might find lucid dreaming interesting as well, just based on the interests youve names so far.

also, WELCOME

edit: er i guess youve been here a while lol, nevermind

Oh philosophical films aswell?

Let's not forget "Primer" then!

2001: Space blah blah is a super heady film that comments strongly on man's desire to control his sorroundings. It's 2 hours, but feels like 5 years. I can only watch it once a year or so.

By Descartes, you might wanna pick up "Candide." A really interresting fiction work where D. pits different world views against each other. It's a little rough and simple, but it's pretty good stoned.

I'll get back when I think of more.

Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" has been known to shake up the complacency many people have in their political views.

psychosocial:

Just a few, summer ain't that long.

philosophical:

I feel this'll touch on psycho-social:

A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

If I could only have one book to read, that would probably be it.
It definitely incorporates all three and is considered one of the best books of the 20th century

1984 is a good companion, but I vastly prefer Huxley over Orwell. Maybe its because he did so much acid
