Fuck you FDA

New Cigarette Labels Are Gruesome On Purpose : Shots - Health Blog : NPR

Apparently the FDA is going to start making cigarette packs display a graphic warning. They're response to people complaining that they dont want these fucked up wanring labels is pretty much "thats the point, you shouldnt like smoking." Fuck you, FDA, if i smoke cigarettes its because i chose to.

all the press seems positive though. how can this possibly be constitutional.

im not being a pussy, i'd still buy them. my point is that i like the aesthetics of some cigarette packs, and i'll try to collect different packs (like when american spirit had those tins i collected them all...pretty useful). i should be able to buy a product that looks the way i want. how cigarettes are being treated represents a shitty outlook of the government, they dont have the right to impose this level of control to eradicate something thats completely fucking legal.

Do you really think it will make a difference? It hasn't here.

They tax the shit out of tobacco as well and its still as popular as it ever was.

A pack of decent cigarettes costs like $11.

People will smoke either way. Let the government think they are helping.

The pictures will only make a new pack to collect.

yea i dont think it will affect smoking rates. its not like i want more people to smoke, its the fact that they're trying to impose a lot of control anyway. the more of this government overstepping is allowed the more people get used to it. imo its an issue just on principle.

I hate the way taxpayer dollars are spent on anti-tobacco campaigns. I think people should be able to smoke if they want to, and as a result, I'm being forced to support something I don't believe in.

Then again, pretty much everything the government does fits this line.

you know they have been planning this for years right? i knew about it because in canada they were proposing to make ours even more graphic (because graphic warnings don't work), but then the tobacco companies successfully lobbied the government to stop it. one or two of the labels include barb tarbox, who was an anti smoking activist from edmonton who allowed people to photograph her in the hospital while she died of cancer.

if dying of cancer bothers you, don't smoke.

Its not like they are outright lies like with other substances. Tobacco being bad is scientific fact. That isn't imposing control, it is just presenting facts in such a way that the average idiot will read them.

It might not make them quit, but at least we will have slightly more informed idiots.

They know it causes cancer, but tobacco can do so much more than that.

It is constitutional because it is commercial speech.

I don't know. I'm torn....

We don't want the government to impose in this way BUT, we do want the government to pay (disability) when people get sick from it.

Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

that's the pertinent legislation

and as much as it pains be to admitt it, anti smoking campaigns have been highly effective in reducing tobacco use..that and death

Here in Canada I'm sure that public healthcare has a bearing on the price/tax of cigs.

Quitting was hard, but worth it.
I didn't do it because of the packs (which didn't exist then)
I did it because it was tearing my guts apart.
I went a many years without smoking at all.
I'd say in the last 2-3 I've had a cig or two or three a year around a camp fire or with a friend.
It's made the whole thing a lot more enjoyable, as it's a choice now and not just a habit.

What's next?
McDonald's wrappers?
Beer boxes?
People with osteoporosis on milk cartons, advising us to drink more calcium?

education is preferable to legislation(cost-wise)
obesesity is a much greater threat to the public health then tobacco use

they already label certain fast foods(and should)
