Only registered voters are called to serve on juries. Most cannabis trials by jury are deterred by 3 stripes, 404 gag rules and mandatory minimum sentencing. Snitch arrests make up most of the cases. The majority are Plea bargained, along with $4500 rehabilitation facilities and urine testing, monitoring, fines and probation costs. Tell Attorney General Holder:
Protect Every Citizen's Right to Vote
Today, 30 states have passed laws requiring voters to present identification to vote, and in 15 of those states, voters must present a government-issued photo ID. These laws will result in untold numbers of legal voters being turned away from the polls because over 21 million Americans do not have government-issued photo identification. Obtaining a photo ID presents a substantial — and unnecessary — barrier for many of our nation's citizens. There is no credible evidence that in-person impersonation voter fraud — the only type of fraud that photo IDs could prevent — is even a minor problem in our country.

The attacks are not just limited to voter ID. Some states are engaging in other voter suppression tactics like restricting voter registration drives and reducing the amount of time for early voting. All these laws disfranchise eligible voters — especially racial and ethnic minorities, the elderly, low-income individuals, students, and voters with disabilities.

The Voting Rights Act vests significant authority in the Department of Justice to ensure laws are not implemented in a discriminatory manner. Because of some states' troubling history of voter suppression, any changes in their elections laws are subject to approval — or "pre-clearance" — by the Justice Department under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. In jurisdictions not covered by Section 5, the Department must ensure that these laws are implemented in a way that does not discriminate against protected groups in violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

Voting Rights
Established in 1965, the ACLU Voting Rights Project has worked to protect the gains in political participation won by racial and language minorities since passage of the historic Voting Rights Act (VRA) that same year. The Project has filed more than 300 lawsuits to enforce the provisions of the VRA and the U.S. Constitution.

Stealing America: Vote By Vote

Quote:
The spirit was freedom and justice
And it's keepers seem generous and kind
It's leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin'

End The Drug War, Face Jim Crow
US: Michelle Alexander: Flanders, Laura The Nation 31 Jul 2011
The NAACP has just passed a historic resolution demanding an end to the War on Drugs. The resolution comes as young black male unemployment hovers near 50 percent and the wealth gap has become a veritable gulf. So why is the forty-year-old "War on Drugs" public enemy number one for the nation's oldest civil rights organization? Well, here's why: it's not extraneous, it's central: the war on drugs is the engine of twenty-first-century discrimination--an engine that has brought Jim Crow into the age of Barack Obama.

The Racial Justice Program aims to preserve and extend the constitutional rights of people of color. Committed to combating racism in all its forms, our advocacy includes litigation, community organizing and training, legislative initiatives, and public education.

Combating Mass Incarceration - The Facts
The war on drugs has helped make the U.S. the world's largest incarcerator, but our addiction to incarceration is unfair, costs too much and doesn't make us safer.

The Three Strikes Law is not a solution to crime.... by B. Cayenne Bird
There's a great deal of mass brainwash which happens when the news media prints the government press releases about crime statistics without ever mentioning the fact that they are useless. The public has been suckered with soundbites and statistics into thinking that crime is down because of Three Strikes, Mandatory Minimums, the Death Penalty and Prisons. Nothing is further from the truth.

Three strikes laws

Mandatory sentencing
Like drug law mandatory minimums these have been criticized for limiting the discretion of judges and the jury and disrupting the balance of power.

In 1994, California introduced a "three strikes law", which was the first mandatory sentencing law to gain widespread publicity. Similar laws were subsequently adopted in most United States jurisdictions. The law requires imprisonment for a minimum term of 25 years after a defendant is convicted of a third felony.

There is some evidence that criminals on their last strike are more desperate to escape from police and therefore more likely to attack police. This does not reveal whether or not the criminals in question were or were not more desperate and willing to kill prior to their last strike.

On November 7, 2000, 60.8% of the state's voters supported an amendment to the statute (offered in Proposition 36) that scaled it back by providing for drug treatment instead of life in prison for most of those convicted of possessing drugs after the amendment went into effect.

Criminal Law Reform
The Criminal Law Reform Project seeks an end to excessively harsh crime policies that result in mass incarceration and stand in the way of a just and equal society. The Project works to reduce the number of people entering jails and prisons by reforming our nation's punitive drug policies and challenging police and prosecutorial misconduct and other governmental abuses of power.

thanks buddy,

I'll be working the polls this election, might even get some campaigning in.

Dear David,

You're in for 2012: Welcome, and thanks.

Now forget everything you know about politics.

Because I can tell you that the next year and a half will be like nothing you've seen from a campaign. If we're going to win, we have to be tougher, smarter, and more innovative than ever before.

The President has a job to do, so he's asking each of us to take the lead in shaping this effort.

That work begins now in your community.

The GOP War on Voting

A War on Voting:
Could Redistricting and Voting Law Changes Help Republicans Win in 2012?

A new report by the Brennan Center for Justice warns changes to voting laws could strip the voting rights of more than 5 million people — a higher number than the margin of victory in two of the last three presidential elections. Its findings reveal some 3.2 million people in Kansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin do not have the state identification they will now need to vote. Others will be kept from the voting booth by tougher restrictions for convicted prisoners and laws requiring proof of U.S. citizenship. In 2012, states that have cracked down on voting rights will account for 63 percent of the 270 Electoral College votes needed for a presidential victory. We speak with Ari Berman, author of the new article in Rolling Stone magazine, “The GOP War on Voting," and with ProPublica reporter Lois Beckett, who co-wrote, "The Hidden Hands in Redistricting: Corporations and Other Powerful Interests," about how money is helping re-shape Congressional districts along partisan lines, a practice known as gerrymandering. [Includes rush transcript]

One of the main players in the photo ID component has been the American Legislative Exchange Council, otherwise known as ALEC, who, as you know, is funded in part by the Koch brothers, the billionaire brothers from Kansas. And what ALEC did, was after the 2008 election, they drafted mock legislation for states to then pass, and what happened is, in five of these states that passed photo ID laws, the legislation was cosponsored by members of ALEC and in three states, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, the draft legislation that ALEC gave them was basically almost identical to the legislation introduced. We see ALEC playing a major role.

"Ihre Papiere, bitte!"

Maybe they aren't lapdog suck ups and prefer living as Americans who don't have to listen to "Ihre Papiere, bitte!". Just more Jim Crow and you have no problem with it is no surprise at all. None in the least. Totally expected it. GOPerverts never have a problem lying and cheating. That was the point of the post and for you to disregard everything else speaks volumes. Again, not that I'm surprised by it. I'm only surprised at how many of you dorks come to Ganja forums expecting to find GOPerverts. Any Ganja initiative is subject to the same GOP gerrymandering. Here deadbrain, It'll make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Listen up now. "Ihre Papiere, bitte!"

well, let's see....

What does it take to get a government ID?....

First a legal copy of your birth certificate, cost $10, plus forms and postage. Now take that and another form of ID, and find a way to the license bureau to pay $20 for a government issued ID card.

Now that 30+ bucks may not seem like a lot to you, but for others, it's the difference between keeping their electric on or not. Remember, not everyone is lucky enough to be born to a family where $30 is chump change.

To ME, it means that you have to pay for the right to vote.

Do, at the very least, try to keep up with the conversation. Holder isn't rigging the votes. Holder didn't lie about Iraq. Holder didn't kill 4000 Americans over a lie. Holder didn't fast track Aspartame for Searle and Monsanto. Holder is no Rummy. Nothing to do with Holder except for him to enforce the laws and bust the ugly GOPervert fascists and then you trolls can go back under your denial rock and play with each other.
