I actually just tried looking into what part of the budget funds the GI bill. Couldn't fine anything. Just saw a bunch of articles saying they were looking to balance the budget by cutting my benefits. Guess that's what I get for working though

i think of it as a stimulus package..the post world war2 economy was a result of aggressive government spending and infrastructure investment
GI bill VA loans really created the middle class and what we commonly refer to now as the suburbs

So if we can't raise taxes, why not make the folks pay what they should?
If the corporations enjoy a 14% tax rate then maybe they should actually pay what that 14% adds up to? Loopholes bought by the lobby big enough to drive plane loads of cash through. I wouldn't even mind if the asshole down the street with his fat wife, cranking out a kid every ten fucking months doesn't get his refund this year. Maybe when the reward is NOT spawning another deficient drone to clog up life, folks might learn to depend less on being stupid and led. But I digress...

I think you might be on to something. Companies should be taxed on their entire operations (if they are incorporated in the United States). I don't think outsourcing should be rewarded. I've also heard Bill Maher make a fairly convincing argument on why families with kids should pay more in taxes instead of getting tax credits for having kids. I'd probably even agree to getting rid of the mortgage tax deduction. Actually, I'm completely all in for making the tax code as simple as possible. The government guided economy needs to go. |

Speaking of poverty, what's been up with Greece, Italy, Spain, and Ireland. I thought socialism was the path to prosperity for everyone. The problem is that when people don't have to work for a living, they usually don't. I didn't create the laws of nature; but I at least like to think that I understand them. And there are lots of reasons why people didn't save for retirement, and I can pretty much trace them all back to being irresponsible. For example, no one forces people to have kids 3-5 kids... It's also not a right to own a big screen TV, 2 cars (or 1 car for that matter), or even a house/property. I'd also argue that everyone has many opportunities throughout their life to make something of themselves. It just so happens that it's usually the people with intelligence and determination that take advantage of them. Why should those people be penalized for not taking the path of least resistance? |

That's a very Keynesian opinion... I'm sure that it was just a coincidence that the time period that you're talking about just so happened to be one of the most innovative times in the history of our species. I'm sure it was all due to govt spending though. |
