libya conflict

excuse my ignorance if theres an on going thread devoted to this already

but man ive been really sucked into these the past few days...

Libya Live Blog | Al Jazeera Blogs

"
Moussa Ibrahim, Gadhafi's chief spokesman, called AP headquarters in New York late Saturday and said Gadhafi is offering to negotiate with the rebels to form a transitional government.

Ibrahim, identified by his voice, said Gadhafi appointed his son al-Saadi to head the negotiations.
Ibrahim said he saw Gadhafi on Friday but would say only that he is in Libya. Ibrahim said he himself was in Tripoli."

ha.

...

whats everyones view on whats going on?

crazy shit i say. crazy.

i hope they find peace soon.
its fucked up though :"[–]Gnome_Sane 4 points 1 day ago

Everyone that was walking in the opposite direction to me had more guns in their hands than they could carry along with boxes of ammunition: Beretta pistols, Kalashnikovs, sniper rifles, submachine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, missile launchers - you name it.

But it was quite a sad sight to see a civilian population becoming armed in such a way - it can never be a good thing.

It will only mean that civil law and order may take some time to be established."

My view, It's a bit late for negotiations.

The rebels need to have an election ASAP, and choose their own leaders.

I doubt any of Gadhafi's people will be included.

international west has been trying to play it cool, i hope libyans can set something up without being propped up by or set against the west...cuz if they dont we may have some arab spring hostility

if we can play this right it will equal greater love all over, and thats really all that matters.
fuck the hate, if we can love our brothers (muslim, christian, none of the above, and everyone else) we will be better for this

much LOVE libya i hope you do this right

i think you can. i think we can. dont worry, the sixties was the start but we WILL reach a global consciousness that EQUALS LOVE for all our brothers and sisters

peace
love
swag

I really don't think the rebels are organized enough to make their own government, i have a feeling America is going to be involved in the discussions

After all what was the point of getting involved if we cant choose the next leader?

i hope you're right though Xil

I'm still a little confused why Gadhafi is public enemy number one. Just sort of feels like Saddam to me where no one really cared than suddenly he was a horrible dictator that had to go.I'm definitely against oppression and all of that but why this year? Why Libya? Also everyone in the media are super backing the rebels when I don't feel it's been clearly explained what the rebels are actually fighting for. They're definitely after Gadhafi but all I keep hearing about is "freedom" this and "freedom" that without many plans of what they're going to do after they win which is pretty much evident now. There's so many different groups of people fighting among the rebel like the various eastern tribals and Islamic fundamentalists as well as people who used to be from Gadhafi's regime. To expect these people to all come together and set aside their and form a government after the smoke clears is so ridiculous. It's so strange that's Gadhafi's people have been controlling the government for 42 years I believe they to just expect to kick them all out and replace them and think everything's going to run smoothly is pretty naive.

I've think we've learned in Afganistan and Iraq that it's the people who have to choose how they're government is run and the west can just step in and then suddenly the country is full of equality and everyone's happy. Especially when we haven't even figured out how to do that here yet. Gadhafi may have been oppressive but from what I've seen is that Libya was far more advanced and better off than a lot of countries in the area. I wish the people of Libya luck but I have a feeling it's going to be a long hard road a head of it than more people are expecting.

Just my $0.02

Oil reserves in Libya - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quote:
Oil reserves in Libya are the largest in Africa and the ninth largest in the world with 41.5 billion barrels (6.60×109 m3) as of 2007. Oil production was 1.8 million barrels per day (290×103 m3/d) as of 2006, giving Libya 23 years of reserves at current production rates if no new reserves were to be found. Libya is considered a highly attractive oil area due to its low cost of oil production (as low as $1 per barrel at some fields), and proximity to European markets. Libya would like to increase production from 1.8 Mbbl/d (290×103 m3/d) in 2006 to 3 Mbbl/d (480×103 m3/d) by 2010–13 but with existing oil fields undergoing a 7–8% decline rate, Libya's challenge is maintaining production at mature fields, while finding and developing new oil fields. Most of Libya remains unexplored as a result of past sanctions and disagreements with foreign oil companies.[1]
