maybe tonight I'll post what it means to be "poor", from some people who aren't rich or republican, for a proper rebuttal.

![]() Well... my first thought is when I see these two blokes on the page next to the article telling me what they want me to know... I get suspicious. But I'll let that go and keep reading..... For starters, this is a hot topic for me as I work with people who are poor and live on the streets. Poor seems relative to the culture that the poor are in, in my opinion. I've seen the poor in other countries, and I'll say, America's poor don't always seem that poor in comparison. But again... Poor seems relative to the culture that the poor are in, in my opinion. I'll refrain from comment, at the moment. Without jumping to conclusions about what you want me to take from this... Why don't you just lay it out?

not everybody starts out "poor"
i read a critique of this either at DailyKOS(which i don't particulary care for) or the columbia journalism review(which i love, much less partisan)..if i find it i'll post it later also the comparison between germany and the US is bogus becuase the latter is a considerably older society living in a much smaller land area and the former has a higher % of people living in rural areas

Read somethings about the measure of Poverty:
It's a little more complicated that the article presents.... The Census Stats are what the entire article was based on. Quote:

Better financial planning would benefit a lot of these people. Regardless, I still don't see how one family's decision to have kids financially obligates another family (if that's where you were going with this). Quote:

Good Gawd man.... I wish my life and thought process was a simple as yours.
Nothing exists in a vacuum. Do you have any idea what I'm getting at? Not everyone is born/created equal... despite what that little piece of paper says.

i did get that backwards, and the point i'm trying to make is THE U.S. is a relatively young society with a lot more open space, and Germany is much, much smaller so the population density would be higher regardless of income...
and not every family of 4 starts out poor, most do start out young so financial planning can only go so far

I don't understand what you were trying to convey via the wiki page. Please clarify your point. And the census has it's own criteria for determining "poverty" and just gave the %. The article, I believe, pulled stats from an independent study that's been around for a few months now. |

I have 4 of the things on this list.... I must really be up shit creek.
•80 percent of poor households have air conditioning •Nearly three-fourths have a car or truck, and 31 percent have two or more cars or trucks •Nearly two-thirds have cable or satellite television •Two-thirds have at least one DVD player and 70 percent have a VCR •Half have a personal computer, and one in seven have two or more computers •More than half of poor families with children have a video game system, such as an Xbox or PlayStation •43 percent have Internet access •One-third have a wide-screen plasma or LCD television •One-fourth have a digital video recorder system, such as a TiVo Seriously, except for the car, all of this crap is worth less than $1,000 if you're frugal enough. Even the poor can get a $1,000 credit card. What is any of this supposed to mean? |
