I like Howard Zinn. I once met him when he was in Olympia Washington back in the early 90s. His point of view, recognizing America for what it has been for most of its existence, an imperial power, while once on the left of the mainstream, has gradually become the master narrative that is taught in American high schools.
Yes, America is an imperial power, or put in another way, the great global bully. Yet if we compare America's imperialism to the imperialism of say Nazi Germany, the Soviets, Leopold II of Belgium (who anally raped the Congo with a broom handle in the 19th century) or go back into history and look at what Rome did to its subjugated people, the US's brand of imperialism is almost benign. As Christopher Hitchens said in one of his last interviews:
