The banks weren't obligated to make stupid loans because of freddie mac or fannie mae.

do i think that in the absence of this, that it is other taxpayers job to pay for your health care- ? maybe.

do i think that the government needs to create a new federal bureaucracy to do it? No.
not at all. I think this will only inflate the cost of care, make it less efficient than even now, if such a thing was possible, and ultimately will cause less and less cutting edge developments to come about...among many other negative aspects of it.
Why should your employer be on the hook for your insurance, all this has done has made us a nation of part timers and fattened the coffers of the insurers INCREDIBLY.

Single payer system, the ability to jump ship if you're not happy with piss poor product and performance and a real open marketplace is the solution to our healthcare needs.

But that doesn't jive with the health insurance model and it'll make it so the medical insurers have to actually compete for your business, like most every other business/service in the country.

We diddle ourselves with this healthcare bullshit when the answer is right in front of our fucking faces but that's bad for the bottom line and we all know that is WAY more important than silly shit like 'people'.

I used to haggle with doctors over the cost treatment, like buying a car, I could negotiate the price I had to pay and usually we both came away happy. I'm happy because I got charged a tenth of what would have been billed to insurance, the doc is happy because he is putting cash on the books and that account is closed.

Guess what, can't do that anymore...

I was with you until the haggling part. Maybe it's just our geographic locations but I can't remember those times around here.

You ever ask?

Most people don't because their co-pay is $xx.xx and they only pay a percentage to the insurer and the employer picks up the rest and they don't want to make waves.

They really have you by the balls you know...

Most doctors will charge very little for an office visit, I usually pay around $80 which sounds like a lot but really ALL I pay is $80 a visit, nothing else unless I'm being prescribed something. No monthly fee, no co-pay on top of that fee and since my employer isn't footing my bill for insurance I get paid better.

Ask for a cash price, all they can do is say 'we don't work that way' and then you know how they do work so you can go elsewhere.

THIS!!!!

A huge problem with our medical system is that most consumers are so far removed from the price point of medical care that they don't even consider costs before being treated by the doctor. No one shops around for a doctor that offers the same service for a cheaper price.

IMO, we need to inject more free market//capitalism into the medical system, not more insurance//cronyism.

In my neck of the woods the majority of doctors are attached to a hospital so they aren't able to haggle. They can't afford private practices anymore.

You Americans make me chuckle. Arguing about having what most other civilized countries have had for 50 or more years. Basic rights to health care. A Healthy population works and pays taxes and everyone makes money.
Unfortunately once the bureaucrats get involved all that money gets sucked away into unnecessary administration. it is the flaw in the system. My Canadian social health care has put me back together again many times for free or little cost.
a Hybrid system of social medicine and pay as you go would be sweet.

Did you know Blue Cross is a 'non-profit'?
