Very sad day for America.
The guy was going through mental issues. Also he acted out of his love for America and shouldn't be punished this brutally.

What mental issues? Sounds like media propaganda to me.

""When I chose to disclose classified information... I did so out of love for our country and a sense of duty for others. If you deny my request for a pardon I will serve my time knowing that sometimes you have to pay a heavy price to live in a free society." - Manning

Sounds like the complete opposite of mental issues to me.

Its fucking disgusting how the media portrays these heroes.

I feel like we are living in crazy land with this and the snowden thing. that anyone in america would even think of these guys as traitors goes to show you how entrenched in tribalism and us vs them humans in general still are. its stuff like this that brings to light just how primitive alot of our attitudes still are. we might as well still be living in tribes.

Today the well-known whistleblower Bradley Manning has been ordered by a military court in Maryland to spend a minimum of 5.2 years in prison with a 32 year maximum (including time already spent in detention), for revealing information about US government behaviour to the public.

This hard-won minimum term represents a significant tactical victory for Bradley Manning’s defense, campaign team and supporters. At the start of these proceedings, the United States government had charged Bradley Manning with a capital offence and other charges carrying over 135 years of incarceration. His defense team is now appealing to the US Army Court of Criminal Appeals in relation to this sentence and also for due process violations during the trial.

While the defense should be proud of their tactical victory, it should be remembered that Mr Manning’s trial and conviction is an affront to basic concepts of Western justice. On Mr Manning’s arrest in May 2010, he was immediately subjected to punitive incarceration by the US government, which was found to be "cruel, inhumane and degrading" by the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan Mendez, and even found to be unlawful by US military courts.

The period Mr Manning has already spent in prison will be subtracted from the sentence, and dispensations for good behaviour, parole and other factors mean that it is likely he will now spend less than ten years in confinement. Mr Manning’s defense team are now seeking to reduce this sentence further on appeal. US military law stipulates that the sentence can only be reduced. It is important that support for Bradley Manning continues during this time.

The only just outcome in Mr Manning’s case is his unconditional release, compensation for the unlawful treatment he has undergone, and a serious commitment to investigating the wrongdoing his alleged disclosures have brought to light.

Mr Manning’s treatment has been intended to send a signal to people of conscience in the US government who might seek to bring wrongdoing to light. This strategy has spectacularly backfired, as recent months have proven. Instead, the Obama administration is demonstrating that there is no place in its system for people of conscience and principle. As a result, there will be a thousand more Bradley Mannings.

Its so obvious that they are just making an example of him so the rest of the sheep will stop trying to blow the whistle.

This is the same shit they do at any job when they want to make an example of some employee so the rest of the employees will fall in line.

Its fucking disgraceful that govt and media corruption is this out in the open and still the american people sit there like cattle waiting to be slaughtered.

Manning to spend the better part of his life in prison, Obama declares his administration is "not ready to endorse medical marijuana", the extra-judicial hunt for Snowden along with all the breaches of journalistic integrity that entails.

Tell me again how this is a government by the people, of the people for the people?

Unless those people are high-ranking politicians, spies behind computer monitors, and the super-rich. The rest of us are fucked.

And our country continues to circle the drain of history. Good.

He was stressed about being gay in the military. I don't remember the source. Maybe it was FOX

Jk. I wouldn't trust them.
Remember reading he was under a lotta pressure. One of the hackers he was chatting with did advise against what he did. I think he ratted him out.

in the article i posted it mentioned how during that time he was very confused about his gender identity etc etc.

The fact that they even put that in the article is total bullshit IMO.
Cause being confused about your sexuality totally makes you decide to release documents detailing corruption and illegal acts within your government... ...

Just an attempt to get the masses of homophobes more apathetic to manning's plight. IMO.

Being extremely confused about gender while in the military wouldn't be easy. This occurred before don't ask don't tell was removed, right?
Being that stressed out can change what you give a fuck about and much more likely to be rash and lash out. IE release a shit ton of documents held by his oppressors.

Manning gets 35 years for exposing murderers who get medals of commendation. Sounds about right.

Total propaganda bullshit. Sexual identity issues have nothing to do with this at all. The fact that anyone would believe that is fucking hilarious.

Hes probably under more stress from thinking about leaking these documents than he would ever be from any kind of sexual identity struggle. I mean i dont want to minimize any trauma he went through in that area but struggling with your sexual identity wont get you 35 max years prison time.

This is the result of the government paying off psychologists to come up with any way they can to crucify this guy. Thats extremely clear.

What I like about this guy is that he wanted people to see the reality of war. I heard during Vietnam that more gruesome pictures were displayed in the news and might be why there was more opposition (that and the draft of course).

The American public should be shown the carnage of what our wars cause. I'd be all for exposing every war crime by our troops and showing pictures of dead kids on the front page of the news.

thats actually a pretty interesting thought. thats why i think the internet is so great, for the first time in history people arent fed information, you get to choose for yourself what information you are exposed to.

its not perfect obviously, because you still have to choose to expose yourself to that stuff. right now even with the power of choice, which is one of the most miraculous things that we possess and can express, even with that people choose to just go to perezhilton and browse reddit cat pictures.

if you arent constantly learning shit from the internet you are wasting your own time and you are halting the development of the collective as a whole god dammit. its one of the great ironies of our age that we have the most miraculous tool at our disposal and we can choose what information we want and we end up just choosing porn and cat pictures.

wtf happened to sok, hes making halfway intelligent posts now??!?
