Woah - NDP Win Alberta Majority

NDP have won a majority government in Alberta, with the Wild Rose appearing to be the official opposition and the PC's as third.

NDP wins majority in Alberta, ending 44 years of PC rule | CTV News

Foreigners translation: Left of center party wins majority in the most notoriously right wing province in Canada, with a, relatively new, far right wing party claiming 2nd place and the official opposition and the Progressive conservatives right of center party loosing a 12 consecutive majority governments, 44 year reign.

Oil prices dropping must have played a part, and I suspect all the emigration Alberta has seen from other provinces played a part, but there's got to be an interesting grassroots story, cause for the shift, in there somewhere.

I'll comment more tomorrow. But for now,

woah.

I should ask my baby's momma about it. She's tuned in on all the political jazz and would know a thing or two.

I am curious about what happens though.

Kind of frustrating knowing how NDP were on top in BC for the longest time while living in Alberta. Then I move to BC and it goes shitty Liberal and suddenly Alberta is NDP out of left field.

Since kitch has exhausted his knowledge on Canada.

I am shocked too.
Always thought the Wild Roses were more a myth than an active electable party.
What will be next A provincial majority for the Marijuana Party in BC?

It'd be like if a libertarian-socialist party won, in States-ese.

never been happy with reading political news about alberta as much as today

to give some context, my parents weren't old enough to vote when the conservative majority began

Do you think this has anything to do with the damage the tar sands have done along with the opposition to it?

Like, to what extent do you think the tar sands situation played a part in motivating the winning party's voting base?
i would assume that it at least fueled the environmental liberal lefty fire somewhat, but im wondering what you guys think about to what extent.

Anyone know the actual impact of the tar sands projects on the environment by any chance?

It depends on how loaded that question really is.

We can provide information on emissions statistics, volume of deforestation, volume of water pollution, etc. Can make projections on aggregated influence on global warming. Most importantly, can make accurate comparisons to determine how much worse it is than other methods.

But there are many people who devote years of their lives to finding ways to answer your question to the 'actual' impact.

Imagine a third major US party, just to the left of the democrats, then they win big time in Texas. Good or bad... remains to be seen. My inherent leftist lean likes this. A lot. But we'll see.

Perhaps. There is anger among home owners and environmentally conscious people, an actual Albertan could answer this question much better than I could, but keep in mind that the tar sands have made them the richest province. Big business of course, but also many regular people. A shitty teenagers job at Tim Horton's that pays 12$ an hour in Ontario would pay something like 17 in Alberta.

I know of many people who went out west to make money. Some of whom went and worked in the tar sands for a year, basically just working and living on site, came home and bought a house.

alberta isn't that right wing and our ndp isn't that left wing. they are pro pipelines and pro oil sands. this has nothing to do with people hating the environmental damage, this is purely a political-idiocy fallout situation. everyone in alberta is connected to the oilpatch somehow

China recently started selling a lot more of their own currency to others (as a reserve currency/replacing american dollars or euros) rather than buying currencies, and they gave more foreign aid to Pakistan than the US does. Both are signs of them projecting their own view of world order.

And its scary Especially at home.
