One Vote Away from Legalization

I don't think we've even talked about this yet, but two of the big tent Parties, properly (for once) representing two thirds of the voting public, have legalization and decriminalization as parts of their platforms.

The Liberals claim they will legalize and tax marijuana as soon as possible. The NDP still support decriminalization.

Even if the Cons win, it wont be more than a minority and marijuana reform legislation may be passed. Lets even assume that nothing happens, and look at this from the perspective of ten years ago. Marijuana reform is a serious and openly discussed issue in our federal election. The US has seen serious changes, paving the way for us to change our laws with less fear of reprisal and less chance of black market goods flooding into the country from our neighbours if we were to legalize it. This is a really good situation to be in! Its an exciting shift in our favor!

Yesterday my brother and I got stoned and went to vote to legalize it. Only reason I smoked at all was so if it does change, I can say I voted for it high.

----

But in the general election discussion, (I'll go ahead and direct this to the assumed progressive lean of yahooka) advance polls are open today and tomorrow, and election day is next monday. Our first past the post electoral system encourages strategic voting. So visit this website, ThreeHundredEight.co m find who has the best chance of defeating the conservative candidate in your riding and vote.

Don't let change be defeated by a split vote. Keep in mind that even if the polls suggested a sweeping win for one party in terms of total % of the population, each riding needs to be won on its own for a new government to form.

tl;dr We could legalize soon based on the outcome of this election. Check the polls for your riding and vote strategically for a new government.

I wonder if that was the tactic behind calling the campaign so early... exhaust people on it .

The Cons base is better about getting out to vote in consistent numbers.

Legalization is ahead in the polls and appears to be making ground!

You never know how that seat cookie is gonna crumble though.

I would argue that the Green party is the only party worth voting for in a riding you know they won't win, as the equation for election funding in part includes % of the popular vote (and the other four parties don't need bigger campaign chests, clearly).

i wish the guy i voted for had a chance of winning because he is a total boss. this is not the first time i have voted for him and he always visited my house for a chat before an election.

i have always and will always be a protest voter until the main issues of the election reflect my priorities

I'm a lot less passionate about this election now that Layton's passed away. I'm probably still going vote NDP I guess. I agree with Turm though, I try and keep up with both Canadian and American politics but with both countries having federal elections and now politics has for the most part just become a screaming match between the right and the left and it can become really exhausting. I hate people keep painting Harper to be the next coming of Hitler and Trudeau to be the second coming of Jesus Christ. They seem pretty similar to me and the only people wanting any sort of real change is the NDP and Green Party. But again I haven't been following this election as closely as I have with previous.

I felt the whole "let's legalize and tax weed" was just a grab to get uninformed young voters votes. I don't see legalization happening unless it happens in all the states first. I feel like it would just make border relations miserable. Also the Liberals keep going full out pro weed approach but the Ontario liberals made being a cigarette smoker the most miserable thing ever. If you're going to put less restrictions on one substance I don't know why you'd put more on another.

"Harper is what's keeping this country together!"

I almost sit my coffee all over the kitchen..

We almost argued politics.. Then I went outside.

No wonder we used to brawl when we drank lol

I'm voting green party because I want my vote to represent something closer to what I actually want.

One time I voted 'strategically' for the NDP and I felt like a bit of a sell out, playing that game of popularity.

I'm unusually passionate about this one hehe. I don't think Trudeau is all that amazing, or Mulcair for that matter, but I do think we're looking at a deepening darkness and comparing it to peace, order and good government. Please excuse my hyperbole, the Jays game involved a few beers.

I totally hear what your saying about border relations, but I think the USA has taken more than enough big steps on marijuana for us to not worry so much about what big bro USA is gonna think and feel free to define our own future. And two of the big tent parties agree with me on that.

It is pretty shitty the new laws around smoking in Ontario, but I mean... as much as they piss me off as a smoker, cigarettes are just plain bad for you... and the people around you. Marijuana isn't.

The reality of first past the post elections is that selling out is the only truly effective vote. The liberals promise electoral reform to change that.

So sell out, vote strategic, and maybe, just maybe, we'll get multi-member proportional representation and you'll never have to vote strategically or waste your vote again.

Its just playing the game the way it is. Its not as though any of the federal parties that hold seats actually represent my biggest issues either

At the same time though I want the green party to see that it's getting votes. Maybe it doesn't give them any immediate control, but at least it's an indicator of continued interest.
