Synagogue Invites Muslims in After Mosque Arsen

Peterborough residents rally around Muslim community | Toronto Star
Quote:
A Peterborough community has rallied after a mosque was burned in a wave of hate crimes following the Paris attacks.
On Saturday, Masjid Al-Salaam, the only mosque in Peterborough was the target of arson. In the next few days, the Peterborough community came together to offer everything they could provide - starting a crowd-funding website, generating awareness, and opening their spaces for the Muslim communities.
Peterborough’s Jewish and Christian communities have extended a hand to the Muslims by offering a place of prayer.
“The vast majority of people in Peterborough are caring individuals who respect the differences of others, and support those people who are in need,” says president Larry Gillman of Beth Israel Synagogue, “there is no room for the hate of whomever committed this cowardly act at the Mosque.”
On Monday, Gillman met with Kenzu Abdella, president of the mosque and the Kawartha Muslim Religious Association to discuss opening the synagogue to Muslims in both the Unitarian and Jewish congregations, and to let the Muslim community know that the “Peterborough Jewish Community stands united with the Muslim community.”
Peterborough Mayor Daryl Bennett tweeted a thanks to the several church groups that had also invited the Muslim community to use their space as a place of worship.

“When one neighbour is in trouble, the other neighbour helps,” says Eilert Frerichs, International Interim Minister of Mark Street United Church. “We opened our doors to bring people together, and hopefully this has made us understand one another better and respect each other more.”
The support of the community has left Abdella without words. In a media conference, Abdella commented on how touched and thankful he was to the Peterborough community for the ongoing support, and all who contributed to the FundRazr page, that ended at $110,536 on a goal of $80,000.
“We are really so touched and more importantly, we feel a lot safer than we thought,” he says, “I think a space for the near future doesn't seem to be an issue now.”
Keep doing your thing Peterborough. That city will always be special to me.

I just figured it would be a good idea to spread awareness of something good like this.

Synagogues can't invite people.

Only Jews can invite people..

Haha I wrote an article about this. It's Mark Street's United Church that are actually housing the members of the mosque right now though.
