Ever notice how welfare is always left out of the political races? Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are always focused on, but not welfare.

This Democratic congresswoman wants to drug test the rich

I'm all for drug testing all members of government and anyone in their contracts, or drug testing no one at all.

edit: Although cocaine fueled public policy could get really fun if a bit over-complex while achieving nothing at all

I side with no one getting tested.... but agree that if welfare recipients, who get gov't money, get tested, then I want anyone who gets it to be tested, as well... just to keep things fair.

But seriously.... that's OUR money, not the govt's..... I don't want any portion of my monies used on testing.

Social Security is welfare???

I am getting a pittance return on MY money they took from ME for 45 years.

I am paying for medicare, they take it out of my SS pittance.

I pay tax on (a portion of) my SS.

They allus want to cut SS, not give me MY money back.

They NEVER talk about cutting welfare, MY money, given to people who did NOT EARN earn it.

Welfare's probably a bad word to describe SS and Medicare. All three are entitlements, meaning those who qualify are eligible for benefits by law.

Now i hear The i paid into SS for x amount of years and i expect a return, and this is understandable. But the money people who are working (plus their employers share) contribute to the fund are not funding thier own future retirement, but those who have already started collecting benefits. And conversely, those who are collecting the benefit now are being funded by the current workforce. It's a classic redistribution of wealth, and i really have no problem with it. SS can be fixed rather painlessly, for instance, by removing the cap on income that's taxed. I would not means test it.

Medicare is another matter, it is extraordinarily expensive and requires a overhaul, but even the current Medicare fund is solvent for quite some time.

The reason Medicare and SS or bigger campaign issues than traditional welfare (in general) is because they take such a cut of the budget. Welfare reform is possible, of course, but those two other entitlement programs would still be huge demands on the budget that needs to be addressed regardless.
Entitlements, Military Spending and the Debt service are the three biggest issues facing the Government (and economy) today. Not necessarily in that order

I was responding to the previous post which was talking about the political parties talking about social security but not welfare. I meant to THEM social security IS welfare. I've paid into the system for 45 years, I certainly don't think it's welfare.

just for the record i don't believe its welfare either. It is, however, income redistribution.
Always has been, always will be. It doesn't work any other way
