God damn it

These fucking articles written, addressed to 'white people'

god damn fucking racist bullshit - god damned lazy thinking bullshit -- addressing 'white people'... insinuating that 'white people' can somehow be treated as one contiguous whole, which in turn and as a whole does not understand these things in said article, spoken at me through the author consistently using the word 'you' --- I just... fuck.. (also wtf is up with capitalizing 'Black' and lower-casing 'white')

I get that this article is directed at a certain demographic (a demographic which seems to be defined as folk who have a particular world view of buttery smooth relationships with authority, a demographic which is not exclusively white)... but it is phrased as 'dear white people'

Fuck. That.

If you replaced 'white people' with the word

'people'

in that article.. you might actually have something worth respecting.

If I have to listen to one more person tell me that oppression is a 'white' thing I'm going to lose it.

Please show me an article written by someone intelligent please.

In its best light, articles like that simply do no good for anyone (except maybe arguably boost the morale of the so-called 'Black' demographic by some degree i seeing that it merely exists)

For the 'white people,' it comes across at worst as blatantly racist, and at best, strongly patronizing.

If you took out anything of who is being addressed by the article, it would be a far, far better article for it.

Hold on. We can only have a conversation about race when we acknowledged there is difference.

So while I don't agree with identity politics, I don't have a problem with people identifying others as 'white,' or 'black,' when different skin colour undeniably means a difference experiences and psychological understandings.

Also, Geeno. The cycles of poverty and crime have a lot to do with those statistics, showing that these systemic problems are correlative to the oppression and societal standing of marginalized peoples.

In response to me?

I'm not suggesting there is no difference in race, nor that there is anything wrong with identifying people as 'white' or 'black' (given an appropriate context), and no doubt there is a whole smorgasbord of unique life experiences attributable to those qualities.

My beef is that this article suggests that there is a "white" experience and there is a "black" experience, when in fact this most certainly is not, and for the love of God, hopefully will never be, the reality. Shoehorning entire races into a single, like, erg I can't believe I'm saying this... narrative... is just plain insulting to all the awesome machinations of this reality, and all the potential I see in it.

I agree with you sir-ex. The phrasing he used is definitely ill-advised. Using a short-hand of "white people" to refer to only white people who are not already cognizant of his message is analogous to using "black people" to refer to black people who speak at the movies. Honestly, considering the fact that his target audience is also the most likely audience to use "reverse-racism" as an excuse to discount the rest of the message, it seems pretty dumb. It's like the "dear white people" posts are actually meant for other black people, and not anyone they actually need to sway.

You don't win support for an idea by wagging a finger in someone's face. I get the indignation, but it helps nothing if it's all you got to capture hearts. I support BLM because I don't like seeing my countrymen treated like they aren't worthy of being my countrymen. This is America, dammit! Americans don't deserve to be treated like niggers.

If you feel sort of angry or frustrated about being lumped together as one thing, because of your whiteness...

@rev - i just think you catch more flies with honey. i've known very few people who will honestly consider a message if they think the messenger is disrespecting them. personally i'm not offended because i'm not a think skinned little bitch, but i also don't think i was the target.

@sage - i get the irony. but in the end, it seems like you're saying that the lack of consideration and respect shown to black people justifies the same treatment of white people. i think that's regressive thinking and when taken to the extreme is how we get stuff like these dead cops.

Focus on the irony,
because that's all I'm saying in reply to some comments about the "Dear white pelol'd" letter.

I'm seeking a Zen stick of empathy.... not to be snubbing discomforts in anyone face.

With their own irony in tact I'm sure the letter doesn't believe "all white people",
but is worded so for effect....

tl;dr Zen swat for imagination not cheering a 'reverse racism', if you will.

in my mind it seems like alllivesmatter tells us the ultimate goal, while blacklivesmatter tells us where we need to focus to achieve that goal. sad people are getting so pissy about the wording. have to admit i was originally a bit peeved by it as well, till i realized it wasn't meant how i was taking it, and that asserting alllivesmatter wasn't really necessary and kept getting misconstrued.

I agree. I was just trying to say why it's there. But I can't imagine where they're coming from because I'm white and there isn't a word in the dictionary that can cut as deep as the word nigger said by a non black and meant whole heartedly.

Calling a white person a racist seems to come pretty damned close for a lot of people.

This is a twist on an analogy I like....
About fighting the house with the fire, (BLM)
instead of spraying down the whole neighborhood (ALM).

My fav part is the bottom right corner "im not racist, black friends" line. It is really stereotypical and I understand how that meme came to be.

That's partially why I just declare that I am racist and don't make any mention of what groups my friends, coworkers and family belong too. All of my life I have watched people argue over what's racist and who is racist "dems r da real racists!", and frankly that whole thing has gone stale. The witch hunt of racism hasn't really led to anything productive in society. We stand to gain nothing by accusing others of racism. If they're not violent and they're not in any way advocating for or condoning violence - there's really no harm being done. Whether its welfare programs or sentencing laws, these are not inherently racist policies but they do effect racial groups differently.

I'll gladly be the racist here if we can get over that to have honest discussions about race. The conversation has long since been so polar that it's become utterly meaningless. Theres the stark individualists that insist that it's wrong to group anyone in terms of biological/hereditary (non chosen) categories and then the people who just blatantly hate anyone that everyone that doesn't look like them. This is the level of racial conversation available in mainstream discourse. The little nuance offered is that it's okay to acknowledge races if you're trying to help them or praising them, but if you go in to the negatives and (god forbid) you dont belong to that group - you're the evil racist. This still isn't really helpful.

I think that the thing is if you let racism become more than just a way to generalize for simplicity's sake and it turns into a sickness which eats at a person's ability to make sound and logical decisions and it becomes a fuel for a fire of hatred.
