its nice that you like the cfl but you are really condescending about it. i love it when nfl players come up here thinking they will dominate because they were in the nfl. that seems to always work out well for them

I'm not trying to sound condescending, it's just the truth. Lesser talented players play in the CFL, Arena League, and NFL Europe. Just because they're lesser talented doesn't mean the football isn't going to be good. In all seriousness I'm really excited for the upcoming CFL season. Eric Crouch, former Heisman trophy winner, Nebraska alum, and current Argonaut, is going to have a chance to play QB for the first time since the 2001 National Championship game.

It's a different type of football. I liken it more to the college game, which I also love.

I expect you brits to say things like this, the whole jealousy thing, it's ok. But I fully expect most will have a different opinion once they see guys like Michael Vick, Peyton Manning, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Terrell Owens play in person and in their country. But then again, you guys still wear track suits and shit like that, so this prediction is a bit iffy. And England is a tough market to crack based on their limitations in athletics. They support their own people 100% and hate everything that isn't theirs.

In America, we have such a diverse spectrum of great atheletes. So many that we don't really care about most of them. While in England, as a result of their numbers being so small, they have fewer athletes, so basically everyone loves those few guys. Same goes for really all of Britain. Guys like the boxer Joe Calzaghe from Wales. He is the most popular guy in his country, basically because he's the only star in his country. It's the reason why englishmen cry when they lose a world cup game or when David Beckham steps down as team captain .

If you can't admit the USA, wait a second, I'm including Canada because Canadian teams are an established part of the 'American' sports landscape. If you can't admit we have the best sports in the world, you are blind or loyal to your country, which isn't a bad thing imo.

The worlds greatest athletes come to America to play their sport, to work their profession, excluding soccer of course. It is well known throughout the world, Britain included, that if you want to be the best, you have to be the best in America.

^ The qualification for the World Cup goes over two and a half years and also there are continental championships every 4 years in between the World Cups, so there's no spare time for it.

On topic: If we set the criteria to sum all olympic medals a country has won in the three last summer olympics (gold, silver, bronze), and divide the result by the amount of population the country has, times 10 million (for an easier viewing), we get a representing coefficient of this country's sporting power.

Formula: 2004 + 2000 + 1996 / pop x 100000000

USA: 102 + 97 + 101 = 300 / 300,000,000 x 10M = 10

China: 63 + 59 + 50 = 172 / 1,300,000,000 x 10M = 1.32

Russia: 92 + 88 + 63 = 243 / 146,000,000 x 10M = 16.64

Australia: 49 + 58 + 41 = 148 / 20,600,000 x 10M = 71.84

Japan: 37 + 18 + 14 = 69 / 128,000,000 x 10M = 5.39

Germany: 39 + 56 + 65 = 160 / 82,000,000 x 10M = 19.51

Canada: 12 + 14 + 22 = 48 / 31,600,000 x 10M = 15.18

Britain: 30 + 28 + 15 = 73 / 59,000,000 x 10M = 12.37

To make it even more easier for viewing I made a chart fo yo ass:

You're welcome!

^ Seriously MM's post wasn't even worth a comment, I only chuckled when I read it.

It's amazing how some people think NFL is by any means better than for example the UEFA Champions League.
Both of these two competitions are commercialized beyond all means, but the essential difference between them is the connection of the supporter to his club.

There's a difference in basic spirit between the two sports. In Europe you have people who's club they support can be more important than their job, family or even their own life.
Pretty extreme I know, but the history, the rivalry and the tradition of European football is in no way comparable to the commercial and artificial NFL in America.

Football is everything in Europe, it's about history, it's about war, friendship, statistics, love, hate, rivalry between countries, between regions, between cities, between city districts, a rivalry Americans cannot understand because they didn't grow up in such environment and didn't experience the true spirit of football on their own skin.

Football is the fucking King, he reigns the world, your NFL is a commercial new-invented joke.

More people watch the drawing for the world cup than watch the super bowl. Why , I don't know. Soccer bores the fuck out of me. Christ, how do you people jack off if you never use your hands?

Watching a Greek basketball match between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos is a quadrillion times more enjoyable and passionate than an average NBA match with hot-dog guzzling rich snobs on the stands where the only highlight are the cheerleaders, let alone the superclassico from Argentina between River Plate and Boca Juniors compared to the super bowl where in 4 hours you have like 1 hour active play and the rest TV ads and funny chain measurements on the pitch.

Compare this to NBA:

Or this to NFL:

MM- fucking lol
Sport in USA becomes about $'s pretty early. It is part of some cultures, like Aussie Rules, Cricket, Rugby League in Australia; or long distance running in Kenya. The athletes in these countries are never going to lose their love of that cultural sport.
Obviously, US has a sporting culture, but it is a capitalist market, not a part of your national identity.
Aussies will watch any sport....except Superbowl, honestly. It is the slowest game to watch. The action is explosive but I usually miss it because I'm getting tired.
All you can say is that the NFL is the best collection of NFL players in the world. Otherwise the Olympic team would be full of them.
India, Malaysia, Thailand are fucking good at kicking a piece of leather strap, or similar junk, over a net with their feet.
Tiger Woods is a great athlete.
CW - It doesnt matter where this thread goes, but I agree, the per capita thing is highly relevant. Thanks for the graph Stulic , you are techno-king.
Australia basically pwns at sport. Where did we come in the world cup Stulic?

I hate soccer, i can honestly say i do not know a single person that even watches it. In America the only place you see soccer is like on channel 650 or something. And boy do they have some crazy ass fans, killin each other over people kickin a stupid ball into a net.

And America by far has all the best sports and atheletes, but if you watch baseball for every 10 players 2 might be american, the rest are from porto rico or japan or the slums of south america.

now this is a laugh. Yep, he's the best boxer....that's never left his country to fight. Calzaghe is a british champion, that's it. He gets no respect from the rest of the world. He is a joke in the boxing community.

He doesn't punch, he slaps. In his last fight, in Wales of course, Calzaghe goes on a slapping fury, flaying his arms about like a fairy, until the british ref steps in and stops the fight prematurely.

The only guy Calzaghe has ever beaten that was worth two shits was Jeff Lacey, an average american fighter.

olympians are fantastic at doing one particular thing; running, swimming, cycling, throwing, etc. NFL athletes are really good a lot of things. No where else in the world do the these kinds of pure athletes meet.

world's greatest basketball players ---> goto the America
world's greatest hockey players ---> goto America
world's greatest baseball players ---> goto America

seems like a reoccuring trend in almost every sport, eh?
