Nice to see so many cyclists on here

If my city was more level I'd definitely be tempted to buy a single speed. The ease and maintenance factor would be a walk in the park for simple urban riding.

I own a C'dale Street which I am in love with. Shortened the stem and got a WSD saddle which makes it choice for me. The head shock is phenomenal. I'm looking into a more aggressive road bike but can't make up my mind yet. If I can fork the money the C'dale 6 series is definitely on my list.

Lol, I almost miss working at the bike shop.

Singlespeed Bicycle Conversions by Sheldon Brown

Quote:

Why ride a Singlespeed?

Modern 24-27 speed bikes are marvels of technology, and allow a cyclist to select the gear ratio that will make the most efficient use of his/her energy. If what you're after is getting the maximum possible speed/distance for the minimum effort (and there's nothing wrong with that!) a multi-speed bike is what you need...but, efficiency isn't everything!

If you're riding for sheer pleasure, or for exercise, you don't necessarily place that high a premium on output results, as measured in speed, distance or vertical climb. Instead, you may care more about the actual experience of riding your bike. In this case, you may be a candidate for a singlespeed bike.

Riding a singlespeed can help bring back the unfettered joy you experienced riding your bike as a child. You don't realize how much mental energy you devote to shifting until you relinquish your derailers, and discover that a whole corner of your brain that was formerly wondering when to shift is now free to enjoy your surroundings and sensations.

Paradoxically, a singlespeed is, in another sense more efficient than a multispeed bike! While the single gear ratio will not be the "perfect" gear ratio for all conditions, in the conditions which fit the single gear, it is considerably more efficient mechanically than the drive train of a derailer bike.

A singlespeed bike dispenses with the weight of the derailers, shifters, cables, extra sprockets and longer chain. In addition, a singlespeed gear train runs the chain in a perfectly straight line from sprocket to chainwheel, and avoids the serpentine wind through the pullies of a derailer. You can really feel the difference! A singlespeed is noticeably quicker and easier to pedal than a multispeed bike in the same gain ratio.

Singlespeed bikes are also considerably more sturdy and reliable than multispeed bikes. There's no derailer to catch on the underbrush or to get overshifted into the spokes. The rear wheel itself is a lot stronger than one made with off-center (dished) spoking to make room for a whole bunch of sprockets on one side.

worrd. i usually have a single-speed beater for short runs around the neighbourhood or to the grocery store or whatever.. and for skids, obviously.. hahah

i love 3-speeds because then you can get up those steep hills without a fight or worry of busting your chain and/or hub, [had a buddy back in high school who tore up his leg when his chain came off in a freak accident when he made a sharp corner on his road bike..]

the other day I saw some fixie come up behind me at a stop light going real fast and then just locked up his wheel to stop. It was kinda cool but looked like a pain in the ass. I wish it wasn't as hilly here cause there's some big hills that I wouldn't want to move my legs that fast.

i rode a fixed when i was like 10 years old.

anyways, im going to buy a road bike soon, to excersize, get around, and to do triathlons with.

ive got my eye on this guy so far:

buts its 750 new, which is a chunk of change, but i think i can afford.

im going to check out a TREK dealer tommorrow and see what they offer for a good starter road bike. im also going to look at cannondales and specialized.

im also considering buying used

i've thought about buying a bike. save a TON on transportation. not to mention the exercise. a worthwhile investment indeed -- though I'm unsure about what i'd need, what's useful, what's excess and pointless -- good thread, hooka!

i found this one on craigs list or $540, i might inquire about it.

although its 58cm, so it might be a bit tall for me

thats one things about that makes me hesitant about buying a used bike. buying it new theyll take my measurements like i was getting a tux, and pick the right size frame out n shit

well i just pulled the trigger on this bad boy today

Trek Bikes | Bikes | Road | 1.1

walked to the dealer, rode it home. feelin pretty good about the purchase. test rode a lot of bikes (including the pricey ones). feels good. got a 10% discount on my total purchase (bike, helmet, water bottle + cage)

you people can hate all you want, but take of the [now made in china, not in the shimano factories that used to make quality parts] shimano shit and put on some sram. the rear derailleur on my old trek split in half after about 6 months of riding. took all my shimano made in china crap off and swapped in sram parts. had zero problems after.
