i also tend to think fixies are a pretty retarded fad. riding bikes is awesome. riding bikes without brakes that have no coasting abilities?? no thanks.

my friend has been riding one for a while. he got hit by a truck recently. he blames the truck driver. i blame his brake-less bike.

i rented a bike in the dam as well, single speed with back brakes...it was awesome riding in vondelpark.

carl - you could always bike part of the way and take the bus for part of the way, thats what one of my buddies does when he rides to school on his single speed.

We had a little BMX bike once that we found and painted up. It had no brakes it was fun to ride for awhile because of the challenge. Didn't keep it for long cause of the damage my shoes were taking

they may be popular or a fad but all of my friends that ive talked to that ride them really like fixed, its a different cycling experience. if you are a good enough cyclist and can ride a fixed well, all the more power to those people. -- they dont have brakes, but there are several ways to slow down/brake/emergency brake, or you can just add brakes as a precaution and dont use them unless you have to.

i already said im going to get a coaster and handle brakes for it. you can easily change it from a fixed to a single speed w/ coasting, and ill more than likely ride like that most of the time.

I have to take the M line to school so no bikes allowed. Occasionally I grab my skate board and ride from west portal.
Must be nice being so close to the park.
I m thinking about bringing my roadbike back down to the city so I can cruise the mission district. Only problem is Im worried about it being jacked. My old roommate locked his bike but not the wheels when he came back they both got jacked. I probably should get a junker to ride around

Don't make that poor bike a coaster.

Fixed gear is the most intimate experience you can have with your bike, don't take that away.

The only thing dangerous about at fixed gear is inexperienced or weak-limbed riders. It's really pretty easy to stop a fixed-gear fast if you have a strong enough leg. Some of the guys I ride with ride the hills in seattle, no brakes, full speed, no stopping, just avoiding cars. Only one of them has ever gotten hurt because they waited until they were good enough riders to do such things. (And as such, I don't ride with them there.)

Another nice thing about fixed gear is the pure strength you gain. At first it's hard to even lock up the rear, but that goes away quick. It's more effective than a regular road bike because it strengthens the stabilizing muscles all though your body, not just your thighs.

Just give it some time as fixed. You won't go back...

word -- it sucks the metro doesnt allow bikes. hopefully they will soon...its not too hard to convert space to hold bikes. -- its dope, im in thurr every day.

just get some extra security and know how to lock your bike up correctly. bike theft is a problem, but one can get around it if yer smart about it.
