Hey, I'm Xil's friend... And it depends what you're looking for. Certain radar detectors are better for police radar/laser protection, others are better for red light camera prevention... Some have good random features, others don't.

For the best police detection:
#1) Valentine V1.8 ... They have a V1.7, which I have, and it isn't that much worse, but it doesn't have a POP mode, which can be useful in areas where police use POP radar... Even though POP radar only gives an estimated speed and is excessively expensive, if they use it, expect a ticket even though they don't know your exact speed... It won't stop them. The one other downside to the 1.7 vs the 1.8 is that the 1.7's Ka band detection is just a bit weaker than the 1.8, or so I hear... But it's cheaper, and I'm cheap
#2) Here I'd say the Escort 9500ix, which is generally viewed as the best overall detector for various reasons, such as a GPS that detects common false alarms (such as grocery store doors), and it also warns against red light cameras, as well as just plain telling you the speed you're going digitally, which are all very nice features ... but hell, it's expensive and a lot of its features aren't really needed.

Research for yourself if you care beyond what I call the best the best:
Radar Detector Forums - Radar Detector Jammer Forum
Radar Detectors Reviews; Best Radar Detector

... And if you're looking for a good radar detector - cheaper than face price... Used that work fine:
eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

... I got my Valentine V1.7 for $260 with free shipping. Not too shabby.

How well do they work with 'instant on' radar units?

Lasers?

Are they legal to have in the car?

Don't have much experience with radar scanners, but I am in the market (money willing) for one.

My boss let me use his Escort when I was doing some mountain runs around here a while back. I was very impressed, thing picked up everything. Saved my ass a few times. Shitty deal is on the way back from getting coffee I went to have a smoke, had forgot my lighter, so unplugged the scanner to use the car's lighter. Sure as fuck radar trap gets me. 150$ for doing 84km/h in a 50. Lamez... Oh and cop didnt say shit about it hanging there when he was talking to me about my recklessness.

Once I've done more research I'll post up my findings on here.

Best of luck with your enthusiastic driving.

If you've got a radar detector, go the whole nine yards and run it with a jammer. They're not that expensive. They basically just give who/whatever (i.e: Cop/speedtrap) is firing a laser at you a false reading.

They're usually mounted on/around the front grille, but valentine do a 360 degree coverage system iirc, that costs a shitload unfortunately, albeit, is awesome though.

In car jamming action;

What the arsehole controlling the laser see's

They're legal at the minute in the UK, dunno about the US, as fortunately the jammer is the same system people use to remotely open garage doors. Although there have been stories about police paying people surprise visits early in the morning to check they do actually have remote garage doors...

wouldn't they still pull you over for speeding for an error on their laser?

"but officer I have a laser jammer, its not possible for u to get a reading!"

The point is they can't prove you're speeding when you use a jammer. A static car with a jammer will give the same reading...

"uh we pulled you over because we have an error with our speedgun..."

For the record, RADAR jammers Illegal in all 50 states federal offense (I think it's even a felony). It's regulated by the FCC. LASER jammers legal almost everywhere. And this is regulated by the FDA.

If I were you though, I'd get a nice Valentine, Escort, or Beltronics and not worry about the lazer jammer for a few reasons:
1.) Your radar/laser detector should pick it up in enough time.
2.) Laser jammers (cheap) cost $300... The better ones can push $1,300.
3.) You can't find the goddamn things used, so expect to buy a new one and pay the extra 25% that can usually be saved if buying used.

If you plan on getting a extra laser protection though, I recommend getting an Escort 9500 or 8500 of some type and attaching a zr4 (https://www.escortradar.com/store/la...ifter-zr4.html) ... It's less likely to piss off a cop and gives you more than enough protection.

Oh, and if you're around a lot of cars, you're more likely to pick up laser signals normally... they apparently bounce off cars. Just a note.

Lasers actually have to lock on, if they can't lock on, they'll probably pull you over and tell you to slow down, just don't let them see the jammer. Without a reading though, you can bring it to court and the cop will get in deep shit, so he won't risk it.

But honestly, get the zr4 for lasers.
