FIFA Football World Cup 2010

New Zealand has tonight qualified for the WC next year in South Africa, for the second time ever and 27 years after the first time. Congrats to all the Kiwis on the board, well done bro's!

Bosnia is playing Portugal later today in a first leg (of two) qualifier in Lisbon, a historic chance and I'm already gettin' warmed up with Jägermeißter, 7 hours before kick-off.

The USA has also already qualified, as have Australia, England, Germany, Serbia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Denmark, Italy, The Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Honduras, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and of course South Africa as the host nation.

8 more countries are yet to be given a ticket to South Africa, 4 from Europe which will be decided in 2 leg clashes between Bosnia vs Portugal, Ireland vs France, Slovenia vs Russia and Greece vs Ukraine, the other 4 are coming from the African continent.

Being it the biggest sporting event on the planet (far bigger then the Olympics), it deserves a thread in Yahookas sports forum and if the mods don't sticky it, I'll be bumping it as the time comes near. I did it 3 years ago, I'll do it next year again.

stulic: know that the whole world is rooting for bosnia today, but come july next year, usa will crush the competition

i mean, shit...we beat spain.

actually nm, cuz without davies, our attack is even more pathetic. without a 100% oguchi onyewu, our defense is even more pathetic.

Shit I can't believe how much luck Portugal had tonight. They won 1:0 but Bosnia hit the woodwork three times, so unlucky... I almost smashed my TV and the table but I'll be fair and say that the win was deserved for Portugal overall, they played much better and deserved the 1:0 win.
It'll be a completely different story this Wednesday in the return leg in Bosnia in front of the home crowd...

USA have a great team this year, we'll see how they perform at the biggest tournament next year, I'm tipping a quarter-finals out.

The qualification is finally over. Bosnia didn't make it, Portugal was a bit luckier and stronger and deserves to go to the WC.
Slovenia kicked out the Russians and the Greeks won against Ukraine, but how about that goal from France against Ireland, it's gotta be the biggest cheat ever since Maradonas "hand of God" goal.
Look at this shit:
<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Z8pQPSPISZs&hl=en_GB &fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScree n" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptacc ess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Z8pQPSPISZs&hl=en_GB &fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="a lways" allowfullscreen="tru e" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

This makes me sick and I feel sorry for the Irish, football needs definitely a video referee but the FIFA mafia doesn't want hear about it.

They were showing Thierry Henry's handball vs Ireland for the game winning goal, pretty weak the ref allowed it in my opinion, was obvious there was no way he could have stopped the ball from going out without it.

Bump 1!
One more week of waiting... the test matches are being played all over the world in preparation for the big stage.

I don't think anyone showed top form yet, maybe the Netherlands by thrashing Ghana 4:1 but else we didn't see an outstanding performance from any of the "favourites"

I'm eagerly awaiting the tomorrows friendly between Australia and USA, Aussies didn't convince me yet to be able to pass the group stage and it'll be an interesting encounter next week.

I'll wait till the opening ceremony and probably put my $100 on Argentina to win the cup, return is $900, probably only because of the amazing performances by Messi and Millito at Barcelona and Inter.
Spain, England, Brazil and Holland are the other 4 with good chances IMO.

spain are the clear favorites. argentina are not a good team to bet on, btw.

maradona could manage to have them out as early as the group stage i think.

lol please tell me someone else saw this yesterday. dear leader is probably throwing a fit right now:

2010 World Cup: Roster restricts North Korea striker as keeper - ESPN Soccernet

Quote:
OHANNESBURG -- A striker for North Korea's national team can't be used as a field player at the World Cup because he was listed as a goalkeeper on the official 23-man squad, FIFA said Thursday.

Kim Myong Won, a forward for club team Amrokgang, was listed as a goalkeeper in the final squad submitted to FIFA by North Korea coach Kim Jong Hun. The deadline for the 23-man rosters was Tuesday.

"The three players listed as goalkeepers can only play as goalkeepers during the FIFA World Cup and cannot play outfield," FIFA said. "Kim Myong Won will not be allowed to play as an outfield player if he has been put on the list as a goalkeeper."
i swear someone told me once that communists were supposed to be good bureaucrats.

Hahaha thats classic. So many absurdities with the North Korean team I wouldn't be surprised if they finally ask for asylum in SA.
You go to their training camp as a journalist and try to make an interview with one of the players and all you get is a robotic official in a decorated uniform telling you how thanks to the dear great leader they're a great team and how they're gonna win the cup and similar bollocks.
It's not really a communist state, it's fuckin despotism to say the least.

Anyway, 4 more teams which could be up for a surprise are Serbia, Slovenia, Switzerland and New Zealand, not by contending for gold but by messing up the group stage and proceeding to the last 16.

All those top players getting knocked out before the tournament even started because of injuries is unbelievable, so many of them...
Ballack, Essien, Drogba, Ferdinand, Pirlo... all key players and then key players like Harry Kewell, Julio Cesar and Jozy Altidore still in doubt, it's never been like that before and I think it'll have an impact on the overall outcome.
The guy who injured Michael Ballack in the FA cup final between Chelsea and Portsmouth, just happened to be playing for Ghana who just happen to be in the same group with Germany, what a coincidence.
Or maybe not?
