I plan on thru-hiking the John Muir Trail again this year (220 miles).

My philosophy is, if you're not wearing a backpack, it ain't for real.

I've never done much camping. Two or three times with my day when i was a kid. Definitely not by myself or with friends. I've been in nature just not camping. I want to try it though. I think it's something a man should know how to do, whether or not he enjoys it. Plus I like camping gear like cooking stuff, tent/sleeping bag, knife, compass.

The thing is I don't really know how to go about it. Just dive right in?
No wonder you are such a phoney, you have never had a real experience...

I will be starting my summer off with a light camp at the gorge for sasquatch, then i will be camping on a couple of the outlaying islands on my annual june camping trips...In july I will be heading to northern california to road trip/camp along the 101...August will be peppered with a couple local campouts...

Trick is merc, you really gotta start a pattern and stick with it every year, because you won't learn what it takes all in one year, it is a whole other type of growing up...

i am an eagle scout and have gone camping/hiking in like 20 different states.

washington
oregon
montana
idaho
utah
california
nevada
colorado
wyoming
virginia
new york
DC(not really camping but it was the national scout jamboree there)
arizona
new mexico
and florida

im sure theres a few more then that, but its all i can remember right now

my most epic fail was getting lost in the Bob Marshall Wilderness area when we were 15. me and my buddy were way ahead of the group like normal but i went to the right around this downed tree, and he went left. the trails never met up and we got seperated. i was lost for about 2-3 hours until our scout master made it all the way up.

i was walking up the river expecting to find out camp at the lake we were heading to. but i couldnt see any signs of a lake soon. i looked up on a ridge and a cougar was following along every move i made while he was up on the ridge. my scout master finally got to camp and he had to fire off rounds from his 38 special to signal me where to head. and it scared off that cougar.

i should be dead so many times over.

another time we were camping in washington and made a fire, but there was a burn ban. and the guys in charge of the park had fire marshalls hike all the way up to our camp and we hid out in the woods. we buried the fire pit but it was still smoking like a mother fucker. we had to sneak out after we got back to the bottom the next day because the marshals were waiting for us to give tickets.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, let it be me this year! Every year, we talk about going, but we don't, and I haven't been camping since there was an intact ozone layer. I never feel as right as I do when I'm among pines, breathing fresh air, and far away from cars and noise.

Honestly, I could totally go Unibomber (minus the bomber part) and live in the woods. I really could.
