Who is going camping?
We all know Sage Tree will be out there hugging trees. Who else here is like that? You wear a lot of hiking boots and backpacks, you know who you are.
I've never done much camping. Two or three times with my day when i was a kid. Definitely not by myself or with friends. I've been in nature just not camping. I want to try it though. I think it's something a man should know how to do, whether or not he enjoys it. Plus I like camping gear like cooking stuff, tent/sleeping bag, knife, compass. The thing is I don't really know how to go about it. Just dive right in? |

I love camping, but unfortunately when I got hunting this summer/fall I'm going to be staying in a motel. When you're that high up in the mountains the whether is just too damn unpredictable. I'm sure I will get some real camping/fishing in this summer, but camping is always most fun when hunting.
I've got some great memories of camping... and some not so great...Pretty much theirs only one way to learn is to just do it. I mean I would go to your local sporting goods store and get the jist of what you need, but you will learn quickly. I was told by a hunting safety instructor that he recommends taking everything you would need to survive a couple days even if you're not planning to camp or sleep. The famous saying... "it's always best to have and not need than it is to need and not have." Last edited by José; 05-09-2010 at 07:48 PM. |

The first thing you have to master is the making of fires. Don't bring a lighter or matches, they will just break or get wet when you're hiking in. When you have to make fire in the wilderness I suggest bringing a car battery (lasts longer) and some fine steel wool. When you touch the steel wool to both terminals the steel will burn allowing you to create fire.
When you make the fire I suggest piling a lot leaves on it so it creates a lot of smoke and kills the mosquitos (poison ivy especially). Get the biggest tent you can find. 2 rooms, 3 room, that's all good. If you get a bitch little 2 person pup tent you're going to be hitting heads with the sides which sucks because water condenses on the side at night. Sometimes I don't even use a tent, because the entire wilderness is my bedroom. You will need at least two rifles, one for primary and one for backup (just in case). I would say that, on any given Sunday, I'll shoot probably 8 birds and a at least one small mammal (I mean pig up to bear sized mammals, squirrels and possum are mice to me) with my .30-06. I don't know about you, but a rifle, 30 rack of natty light, 40 cartridges .30-06, car battery, four pairs of socks, lighter (cigarettes), ciggarettes and a five-person dome tent are fucking heavy. I can't carry food with me, so I just harvest it from the land as nature intended. The best places to camp are the most remote. I can't say where, just find some high tension lines and start walking. I would say a day's worth of walking is a sufficient amount of distance away that nobody will hear anything you do. I haven't ever had a problem with people, but I've had some, well close encounters (imagine deliverance with less rapeing). It'll be dark by the time you get there, so whatever you do, make sure you're not camping on the the rough at a country club or in some crazy redneck's back yard. Grass is never that nice in the wild.

No I don't bother watching tv much besides hockey (I know you love hockey, Canadian) football and Budweiser advertisements.

No, you can't camp in a cabin. But but you can camp in a trailer. It's legit to use a camper especially if you're doing it for a prolonged period of time.
