Where's a good place to start? I've never ridden one.

Nah but I saw one of my friends friends had some little like toy one that was the subject of ridicule, but defended as a beginner bike albeit an expensive one. They were talking some engine size business.

By something you don't have to work on constantly..... like a Harley... That is NOT what you want... everyone I've ever known who has one of these has to do constant work and haven't ever been on a ride where a HD rider didn't have to stop and fix something half serious.

Any company whose riders joke 'Its not leaking, It's just a Harley' can't be good.

My Dad, who has been an avid die hard american muscle car man for as long as I can remember bought a Honda.

take that class since you've never ridden,
get something cheap so you're not devastated when it falls.
Im about 200 lbs and im happy with a 600.

Where are you going to be doing most of your riding Geeno? In a town, open road, dirt tracking?
Do you want to go long distances or just local?

There are a lot of different bikes suitable for different purposes.

Don't buy an american bike unless you just want to use it as a toy.
