Ever had good luck at a used car lot?
Is it just me or are used car lots universal liars?
I'm in the market for a used car and it's proving to be hopeless to try and deal with used car salesmen. The idea of a used car lot is great: an alternative to a new car lot. But why is it that all the used cars they stock seem to be riddled with problems? Are there really not enough good used cars for them to sell? All I need is a reliable vehicle, is that too much to ask? But you can't get the straight dope out of a used car salesman, to them every car on their lot is in "great condition.... btw, how much do you have to spend". *sigh* Private party is the last alternative, and that takes even more time and then I have to find a professional come out an inspect each car for me. How can a used car buyer win?

Go find a Muslim...
Best experience I ever had buying a used car was with my friend Samey. I went and looked on his lot, found a Jeep my wife liked and we sat down and he said it was $2,700 if I paid cash and $3,000 if I wanted to make payments on the car. Nobody trying to sell me on financing, trying to 'work the numbers' to see if they could 'get me in the car'. He also let me and my mechanic buddy crawl all over it for an afternoon so we could make sure it wasn't a piece of shit. Now, granted I'm talking a small lot with cars in the sub ten grand range but really if you're buying a used car if you're ponying up more than that, you should really strive for a new car. That much commitment you may as well go for the big balls.

i'm looking to spend $5,000 or less. i've been burned in the past and have lost thousands of dollars trying to resell clunkers. this time i'm doing it right. i'm taking it to trained mechanics and doing full diagnostics. it's amazing how a good detailing can make a piece of shit look like a hot rod. this car i checked out today looked pristine, but when i took it to a mechanic he pointed out that the tranny had been replaced, there was rust in the cooling system, it had a misfire and a backfire and the brake fluid was turned to sludge...... i never would have seen any of that. |

I'm in the market now. Gotta finance something. The hyundai I stole from my parents is about to fall apart. 140k miles in the snow and salt = piece of shit car.
Its funny cause 140k miles on a car thats been in charlotte its whole life, shits only middle aged. As much as I'd love a truck or good SUV, I'm on a slim budget in life and will probably try to find a Civic or something. Going to look around, but will take a guy from West Virginia to inspect them..... fuuuuuuuck i hate buying a car. edit: quick look on craigslist = never going to look on CL for vehicle ever again.

on craigslist just make sure you only search for sale by owner. sometimes there is a shit load of spam scam car sales, its pretty obvious which ones are fake

Ask the right questions too..1 milli second after i signed the papers..the car dealer says..."btw its been in an accident"..it was as soon as i took my pen from the paper...it was only a "fenderbender" fortunately.
