Any pointers at all regarding auto audio?

I finally got sick of living the public transit/cab life for the past few years and saved up this past year and finally got myself my own car. I'm pretty excited but part of me saving up was to put some decent audio in it too. Right now it just has the basic AM/FM radio and a CD player. I want to play my ipod and have a little bump in the truck. I'm not looking for something top of the line but just something that'll give me a little more sound when I'm driving around. The problem is since I've never had a car before I don't really know much about it. I've been kind of reading into it and it sounds like I'd need a new deck, speakers and a subwoofer. I just had a few questions.

Do I need an amp at all?
Do I ever need a subwoofer if I get good speakers?
When you buy speakers do you have to buy more than one? Like the places I've been looking at it'll cost about $140 for speakers. Is this for a whole set of speakers or just one?
How long does something like this take to install?
Any recommended brands to get or to stay away from?
Any other advice?

Thanks a bit of a noob.

Do I need an amp at all? No you won't need an amp unless youre trying to get loud

Do I ever need a subwoofer if I get good speakers? That wil depends on the bass you desire

When you buy speakers do you have to buy more than one? Like the places I've been looking at it'll cost about $140 for speakers. Is this for a whole set of speakers or just one? Usually speakers are in pairs

How long does something like this take to install? Not long man use the webs and you'll find the exact wiring schematics your looking for

Any recommended brands to get or to stay away from?
Any other advice? With audio components you get what you pay for

Thanks a bit of a noob.
If you run a sub you'll want an amp to get the desired effect.

Yes, you will need an amp to power a sub. I see a lot of sub and amp combos out there now so you might be able to find a decent deal by buying them together.

If you just want a little thump to your music, a 10" sub will do that without costing too much or requiring a giant amp. Some of those people you can hear coming blocks away probably have two 12s or 15s and a huge amp. A sub sure makes a helluva difference tho if you listen to music with any decent bass tho. I love 'em and can't stand not having one in my car right now.

Speakers come in pairs. So assuming you have 4 speakers, you will need two sets, one for front, one for back.

Installation isn't to hard. You will need to buy a vehicle-specific wiring harness for the head unit and a wiring kit for the amp and run a line from the amp to the battery and another line to the back of the head unit. Make sure you get a head unit that has at least one set of rca's out back, although i think they all do nowadays.

I was always an Alpine fan myself, but my buddy had a pioneer setup and it sounded good too.

my one pointer would be.. spend your money on your amp. the power you get through the amp is whats going to give you good sound. obviously if you have shit speakers, its not going to sound great, but the quality of the amp is what gives you clear sound at higher volumes.

also, if you are going for fidelity, you dont need a huge sub or subs. too much sub is just going to turn your car into a giant sub box and it will make everything sound muddy.

If your unsure of your s speaker size check out crutchfield.com and all you have to do is put in your vehicle info and they will tell you what fits.

If your truck is a regular can a quality 8" sub will save you leg room. You can get shallow mount subs also.

Like mentioned above just drop us a line on any questions and well get you some answers.

Good answers you two!!

make sure your car produces enough electricity to power whatever you put in.

(only a concern on huge systems)

and for the love of music in general, make sure the trunk is sealed properly and the license plate doesn't rattle.

I hate it when that happens.

Vacuum tubes always sound best...

And yes, it is a car stereo.

Thanks guys, this all helped a lot. I'll definitely put my focus on an amp. I have a couple friends who tell me they have "nice" sound systems but I always find the problem mentioned above when I'm in their car it's all bass and I can barely hear anything else. I'd rather not have anything than have something like that. I'm hoping to get something put in this weekend I'm sure the audio place I'll get it from will be able to help me out but you guys are helping me out enough so I don't go in completely clueless haha. So it sounds like I'd need an amp, two sets of speakers, a sub, a deck and all the wiring. I really don't want to pay over 1k for it but it seems like an expensive hobby. But again I'm just looking at some basic, beginner that sounds better than what's originally in it. Just want a nice crisp sound I can crank up a bit in the summer and have a bit of a thump. Do you think it's possible to get a full system for around $900 or under? If I were to just start off what should I leave for last? A set of speakers? A sub? Right now I'd say the most important thing for me is the deck so I can listen to my ipod.

I was totally in your shows in 96.. I went to a local cat audio joint called Ultimate Audio in Lexington,Sc to buy all the goods. They knew right away I was clueless about what I needed to pull off the sounds I was going for. Long story short I spent piety much every other day after school hanging out and learning shit and even got hooked up with good deals and freebie jl tshirts. They do it for love of car audio not the money.

You won't need to spend nearly a grand to get your desired sound quality. I.would recommend staying away from best buy's speakers and subs. They aren't the best selection and quality. They are also suspect as far as security systems too. Speaking of which I recommend adding a torx had screw on every speaker you install in view. Every thief had a flat head and a philips head screwdriver very few carry torx bits.

Your biggest purchases will be your front stage (speakers up front) and the amp tuning them if you decide to run an amp or 2. That said I welcome the shit out of you to one of my first lives man! I how you find some good folks irl that can guide you through this journey.

Feel fre to ask any questions here our in pm.

I honestly would leave the sub for last. You will be able to enjoy your tunes while you search for a sub that will be optimal in you situation. Airspace is a huge factor in getting bang for your buck with subs. You may want to consider some sound deadener to cancel out road and engine noise. I found that makes a huge difference in any vehicle since the manufacturer doesn't always do a good job in that department.

Although, I did run a cheap amp my friend gave me when I first got my setup. It lasted a few months before it fried itself. I bought my 12" Sony Xplodes from Best Buy but that's because I wanted something that day. My next setup is most likely going to be Kicker L7 Solobarics.
While were on amps. And I'm not trying to sound like a know it all bc I
don't I'm willing to bet that a (example) road gear (remember those) 300w mono block isnt just as clean and distortion free as a kicker zx300.1 (ces compliant btw)? A speaker its only as good as its signal source aka the amp and wiring
Again not dating your won't but

Dunno what happened there at the end... I was trying to say I want saying your wrong but I disagree with the speakers sounding the same on a $20 amp as they will a $200 ces compliant amp.

Also to reggie make sure you go by the rms wattage rating over the max/peak wattage rating. just bc an amp says it makes 1000watts it could only be for 10 seconds before our shuts down.

I think ~1~ said he installed car audio for awhile. Hopefully he'll stop in and school us all

Anonymous: your gonna love the solarbarics they will smoke those sonys (which aren't bad for the price imo)
