NY's Future Cop Cars

The NYPD's High Tech New Police Car Can Spy On Everyone

Criminals, terrorists and suspicious-looking minorities beware: the New York Police Department is coming after you with the cop car of the future! The NYPD is testing a prototype cruiser with the latest advances in public surveillance, er, public safety.

The Wall Street Journal has a breathless puff piece on the department's "smart car," which isn't a Smart Car, thankfully, but rather a high-tech patrol vehicle outfitted with gear they would like to see on their vehicles in the next decade or so. P

It's part of a long-term plan called NYPD2020 that focuses on advancements in police technology and teaching "counterterroris m awareness classes for traffic enforcement agents," which sounds awesome. P

Here's just some of what the new car can do: P

It has two infrared monitors mounted on the trunk that record any numbers it sees—such as license plates and addresses. It has surveillance cameras and air sensors capable of sending real-time information to police headquarters.

[...] The car's scanner can read license plates, then check the results against a database that contains the plate numbers of cars that are stolen, may have been involved in a crime, or have outstanding infractions. The data is stored for an indefinite period, though that will likely change.P
The car can also scan for the air for increased radiation levels and send the data back to police headquarters. P

No mention in the WSJ story, of course, of the NYPD's extremely questionable track record as of late when it comes to civil rights, namely wiretapping mosques and the infamous stop and frisk program. Who cares! Police car of the future, baby!

Cop cars already have this in the rich suburbs of new jersey.

Cars decked out with many 10s of thousands of dollars worth of equipment, and all they do is write traffic tickets.

Repoman actually made this tech mainstream, just about every tow rig I've seen in the last five years have plate readers on them, linked to a much larger database than any old criminal network...

I remember for about 3 weeks my insurance had lapsed, and I was driving almost four hours a day. J
I just heard about the license plate scanner days before my insurance lapsed. It was a stressful three weeks. A car full of drugs, no insurance, three more hours of driving and a brain strung out on way too much blow... Glad those days are behind me.

What good does all this do if they can't catch you? Put that in a Nissan GTR and we're done for.

They can and will catch you, don't worry. No need for a GTR when you have a team of police w/helicopters, k9s, etc. If you are running from the cops in a car, you almost surely will be caught.

Cops on tail? Have a few friends at a predetermined building you can drove through if far enough ahead, have said friends carry a couple cans of spray on plastidip (not same color as your car for obvious reasons) drive through and when you come out the other side with a new paint job you're golden. Cops will be like " Where did he go, shit, we lost him."u can even peel it off later if you wanna live on the dangerous side

Disclaimer: this probably wont work and I base this purely off of imagination and GTA. You're plates will blow the whole secret and I doubt you have a NASCAR team that can change shit while rolling. I take no responsibility for anyone who trys this but if anyone does this and makes it away safe, you must give me credit then and well trademark it as " Logans low low, shit where'd he go"

if i was running from the cops via car, id definitely try the way they did it in Gone in 60 seconds.

whip it around a corner and immediately pull into a driveway and turn your lights off and duck.

i too would employ all the knowledge i have gained from fictitious movies when trying to escape from one of the most intense situations a person could be in in real life

like find one of those car-hauler trailers to use as a ramp
